Pleasantly Surprised

After reading some prior mixed reviews I was somewhat hesitant about making "The Buckle". I went ahead and made it but used canned peaches instead of cherries and pears. I cooked it 6-7 hours not checking it until a good 4 hours into the cooking. It was sweet...but not "sickenly so" as others suggested....it's not foo-foo or extremely gourmet...but a good solid dessert. I think you can take a bit of creative license with it....strawberries might be a good substitute.

Easy dessert

So easy, and the crock pot made it even better.... just set and forget it. I did it for 5 hours and it was perfect. Topped it with vanilla ice cream. My spouse loved it as well.

Simple and delicious!

I've never cooked dessert in a slow cooker before, but I will surely be trying this again. The cake was moist and the combination of pears and cherry was delicious. The dessert wasn't heavy on the stomach. So easy to prepare and easy to clean as well!

Will make again. Best advice I can offer: use Duncan Hines yellow cake mix and Quaker instant maple oatmeal. Cheaper (i.e. dollar store)ingredients will ruin this.

All the ingredients were great except the cake mix (I substituted a chocolate mix instead of yellow.). The cake mix turned out raw! I will try it once more, changing the temperature to "High" instead and cooking it for a shorter time to see if that works.

loved it

loved the idea of cherries and pears-- my family will not eat any fruit with a distinct texture so cherries work i am bored with the plainold chocolate fare and loved the ease of this recipe paper towels were a great suggestion

Great recipe that is easily adaptable

This is a great slow cooker dessert. I've made it many times and it comes out great each time. I've even used other ingredients to make other kinds of buckles, and I've gotten great responses from the people who have tried them. For instance I like to slice fresh apples (Macs and Cortlands) and mix it with canned apple filling.

Good but too rich

This was an easy recipe and it tasted good although it was way too rich and also had a "chemical" taste. I'm sure this was from the boxed cake mix which I am not used to.

My Favorite!!

User: Teri from Federal Way, WA    User Rating:
My husband and I loved this. I used 2 cans of sugar free cherry pie filling and only one can of pears. I also put a layer of cinnamon sugar right before the almonds. I tasted it after four hours and thought it was awful. The cake batter was raw! I simply turned up the crockpot to high and let it bake for another couple of hours. It was a long wait but worth it! I have an older crockpot so I will cook it on high next time.

I made this Super Bowl Sunday. I do not enjoy baking but this sounded easy & good--and it was. In fact my 10 year-old nephew & daughter made it for me. That's how easy it is. Everyone loved it! I served it after 4 hours on low in the slow cooker but next time will cook it for 5hrs. Served it w/ whipped cream but vanilla ice cream would be good too! Refrigerated the leftovers & reheated the next day. Just great! It's a keeper.

Didn't care for the maple oatmeal flavor, possibly cinnamon raisin would taste better. Also, yellow cake did not "bake". It was like eating uncooked cake mix.

This was so incredibly easy and the results were mouth watering. I added a handful of coconut to the almond and oatmeal mixture and satisfied my coconut fans. I will make this quite often, especially in the cold months.....very much a comfort food/dessert.

A friend made this for a Thanksgiving dinner we had last night. It was awesome. It was perfect for a cool fall evening with friends. This is my idea of comfort food. Several of us asked her where she found the recipe so we could make it for our families. The only thing she did different was double the batch so there was plenty to go around.

It needs something. I followed the direction competely - only I used vanilla extract instead of almond. It cooked up beautifully however it is a bit too sweet from the cake mix. It's yummy but a little will go a long way. We decided if I make it again to add a little lemon juice to the fruit mixture to give it a little tart balance.

Fantastic and Easy!!!

Despite some of the bad reviews of this recipe I decided to make this anyways...I am glad I did!! It was very easy to throw together and fast! After reading the reviews I made a few of my own changes. First, I do not like cherry fillings. So I changed it to blueberry pie filling. After doing this pear didn't sound good to me with the blueberry, so I changed that to diced peaches and no sugar added; so it was just in water instead of syrup. I also did 1 1/2 packs of instant oatmeal because 1 didn't seem like enough. In addition to the sliced almonds I added pecans and doubled the amount of nuts just because I like nuts. After having it cook for 4 hours on low I removed the paper towels that were saturated with water from the moisture, then put the lid back on and and turned the crockpot to "keep warm" for another hour. I wanted to have crispier/crunchier oats/nuts. Everyone of my family members loved this and when I told them I put in a box of cake mix they thought I was joking because you couldn't even tell. This will definetly be a repeat!!

Terrfic-sharing this recipe with all who will listen!

Rock Star Cherry Crumble

I made this for my high school foods class. They were very curious about that made our kitchen lab smell so good. Out of 24 students, I had possibly 2 or 3 that did not prefer it. I omitted the almond extract because I did not have it. I followed the directions exactly as printed, and the texture and delivery was a real treat. Many students ask for second servings - as I initially gave them a 'taste'. How about making this with apple pie filling, mandrian oranges with lemon cake? Sound good? I think I am ready to experiment with this recipe.

This was very tasty and extremely easy. I made a few substitutions. I used orange extract instead almond extract and pecans instead of almonds. Thats just what I happened to have on hand. It turned out great. Served warm it seems a natural for pairing with some vanilla bean ice cream instead of whipped topping. Great recipe Sandra.

The recipe cooked up wonderfully. I noticed a few had a problem with the way it cooked in the crock pot. I loved the ease of it and not having to light the oven. Now the taste, I just did not like it. Maybe it was the combination of the pears and cherries? I don't know. Also wasn't too fond of the oatmeal and the yellow cake mix combo. It was also way too sweet and I like sweet. Thank you for the recipe, but I don't think I will try it again.

This recipe gets 5 stars for easy preparation and taste. I served it to 15 people at a party this weekend and everyone told me they enjoyed it. I use to make something similar to this years ago in the oven. This will be a staple for me when I am entertaining. It's too easy and too good.

It's super simple and super delicious. I love the fact that this recipe takes about 7 mins to put together in a crockpot. We made a few changes...omitted the almond slices, used vanilla ice cream in place of the cool whip topping. This is very rich so it only takes a small portion to satisfy you.

Like someone said I also have a recipe close to this one where you use the oven.. I used the same idea.. my recipe calls for 2 cans of pie filling, one yellow cake mix and a stick of butter. I put the filling first then the cake mix and the butter... did the paper towel idea and cooked it for 4 hours on low... very good and it didnt heat up the kitchen. Great idea for those hot summer days when you don't want to heat up the kitchen...

Molasses - Thick a$$

User: Glen from Orlando, FL    User Rating:
The cake mix and the cherry filler became brown as can be. Good thing I toasted the almonds as it was the only recognizable part of the final product. When you have to explain what it is - you probably shouldn't bring it to work to share! Tasty - perhaps real cherries instead of cherry pie filling will cause the final result to appear as the sum of its ingredients instead of brown like molasses.

I already had a recipe similar to this that is baked in the oven. I prepared mine with low sugar cherry pie filling and lite pears which reduces the sugar content. I used a butter recipe cake mix and sliced my unsalted butter pats very thinly so that they covered the entire top. I used an organic cinnamon/apple oatmeal mix with about 1 TBSP of brown sugar and 1/3 cup of toasted sliced almonds for the topping. I made sure about the paper towels and no peeking because this would greatly effect the outcome. I tried it hot after about 5 hours with ice cream, and then I cooked it for another 70 minutes, and I think that improved the texture more. It is very tasty, especially with vanilla ice cream. You have to like cobbler to enjoy this. Plus, with the high temperatures lately, it is nice to have a dessert recipe that doesn't heat up the kitchen.

This was seriously way too sweet. The oatmeal topping tasted good but the yellow cake mix ended up becoming a thick gummy mass of sugar.
