Great pie, but cook longer 07/19/2008 at 11:02pm User: kathy from louisville, KY User Rating: I live in Louisville, KY and have had many Derby pies, this is close but not exactly the same. Although it is so good, maybe they should have another horse race and use this pie as the theme dessert! LOL! I made this in 2 deep dish crusts and had to return it to the oven. You will need to cook 2 deep dish pies about 50 - 60 minutes. Very rich and chocorific! We served it with vanilla ice cream and it was wonderful! Thanks Paula and Food Network! Fantastic!! 04/04/2008 at 11:09am User: Ehren from Danbury, CT User Rating: I watched this episode a couple of days ago and just decided to make it. The pie is just delicious. It is a crusty outside with an incredibly moist inside. I followed the recipe exactly how Paula did on her show and it truly is a fantastic pie. I am now head over to a new neighbor to drop one off as a "welcome to the neighborhood" gesture. I'm sure they will love it. Thanks Paula!!! I love your cooking and positive attitude. Thank you again!! OMG I'M MAD!!!!!! 03/30/2008 at 11:24am User: Anonymous User Rating: I was looking forward to making this dessert. My life lately consists of cooking and baking. I've had to stay off my foot for like a month now, long story. Anyway I use a wheelchair to get around and the only thing that keeps me sane is baking/cooking for my husband. Ok, so anyway I made this recipe and when the time was up I took it out of the oven to cool because it looked done. I followed the recipe on the food network site. I cooked it for 30-40 minutes. I let it cool, big mistake!!! It was raw in the middle!! I put it back in the oven but my oven had cooled down already! Didn't help!! I cried and cried!!! I'm so mad that whoever runs this site doesn't do fact checks!!! This has happened in the past, I think I'm going to call the Food Network Monday morning and complain!!!! The Best Brownies! 03/27/2008 at 02:19am User: Anonymous User Rating: This brownie pie recipe was absolutely delicious. It was very chocolatey, moist, and very nice balance of flavors. I toasted the pecans beforehand so that brought out even more of the pecan flavor. I definitely recommend this recipe! very good 03/24/2008 at 02:35pm User: jeanne from burlington, WA User Rating: My family really liked this recipe. However, the cooking time is wrong. It should be 50-60 minutes, as stated by Paula on the show. Ky Derby Pie 03/23/2008 at 01:28pm User: sandy from lagrange, KY User Rating: This is a copy cat recipe of Derby pie. The morsels are not melted in the derby pie recipe though. Creates a different texture but ingredients are identical. Taste 03/23/2008 at 01:01pm User: Cheri from Mobile, AL User Rating: Absolutely the best pie I have eaten in a very long time Very good 03/21/2008 at 04:40pm User: BRANDI from Hermitage, TN User Rating: I made this pie the other night and it was very very good, but I just don't see why it's called a pie. Its just a delicious brownie in a pie shell. But anyways, I had to cook mine for about 45 minutes. I don't like recipes that you kinda have to guess at, because I could have easily burnt it. But over all it was very good and I did get alot of compliments on it. divine divine! 02/06/2008 at 05:20pm User: Rochelle from Tualatin, OR User Rating: I saw this aired and drooled over it and finally I got to make it! I thought it was super simple to make. The cooking time was a bit weird, i guess. I cooked it for 30, but it still looked raw in the middle, so I cooked it for 5 more minutes. Then another 5. I took it out because I didn't want to overcook the outside. I just let it set on the counter. I gave one pie to my friend and the other I kept. I ate it in 1 day! My husband who hates nuts loved it! My friend called me up 10 minutes after I left and said - this should be called "better than sex pie"!! Ha ha!! Delicious and easy! 02/03/2008 at 07:22pm User: Suzanne from Cleveland, OH User Rating: This was simple yet really, really good. I used 3 pie shells and baked them for 40 minutes-- nothing was over or underdone, it was perfect! It has a very smooth, rich flavor. Will definitely make this again! YUMMY 02/02/2008 at 11:58pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I AM SO GLAD THAT I READ THE REVIEWS BEOFRE MAKING THE PIES. I MADE 2 DEEP DISH PIES. THEY TOOK BETWEEN 50-60 MINUTES TO BAKE AT 350 degrees. WE TRIED IT A FEW MINUTES OUT OF THE OVEN & IT TASTED LIKE MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKE. WHEN AT ROOM TEMP, IT TASTED LIKE A BROWNIE. WHEN CHILLED OVERNITE, IT TASTED LIKE FUDGE. WHICHEVER WAY, IT WAS A CHOCOLATE DELIGHT. Kentucky Pie wonderful! 01/30/2008 at 04:40pm User: Lorena from Shipshewana, IN User Rating: I tried this pie and it was so gooey and wonderful! The next day we warmed it up in the microwave and it was just as good! Great 01/29/2008 at 03:59pm User: Krecynthia from Lake Charles, LA User Rating: I've made this pie several times, easy to make, delicious to eat. A must have for chocoholics. Everyone whose eaten it loved it and said the name should be changed to better than sex pie. SO GOOD!! 01/27/2008 at 08:25pm User: Chelsie from Sherwood, OR User Rating: This was SO good. Basically a super good brownie in a crust. Very easy and very tasty! This recipe is a keeper! YUM and baking time 01/25/2008 at 02:37pm User: Annamaria from Milwaukee, WI User Rating: Yum!!! Very delicious! I watched Paula make the pies on TV and she gave us the correct time to bake the pies. As far as the wrong baking time in her magazine or this site, people do make mistakes. I found some of the reviews to be a bit to harsh. I love ya Paula!!!! You are my favorite! Double Yummy 01/20/2008 at 05:15pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I have made a variation of this recipe for years, but never made it with self-rising flour or a pie crust. I have to confess that this version rates a 5-star from my husband. Don't be tempted to overbake the pie. Once it cools, the center firms up. Remember, it is a pie, not a cake. I found that 40 minutes tops baked it to a consistency that jiggled when hot, but was easy to cut when cool. The next day, we warmed it in the microwave for 10 seconds and the center was warm and gooey, but not runny. Would highly recommend this tasty recipe for any occasion. Delicious 01/18/2008 at 03:23pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Good and easy. Very disappointed . . . 01/17/2008 at 10:18pm User: JAN from Ringgold, GA User Rating: I cooked two pies in deep dish pie shells for 40 minutes. They looked beautiful and since I had two I sent one home with a friend. When I cut into my pie it was no where even close to done. I was so embarassed thinking about my friend cutting into that runny, runny pie. Cooking time is way too short!!!!! An hour is probably more like it. Quite the Pie!! 01/16/2008 at 01:59pm User: Gina from San Jose, CA User Rating: I would agree with the others on the longer cook time. The pie is absolutely a chocolate lovers dream come true. I have made it twice in the last week and a half, upon the request of my husband and children. This is definitely a keeper people, Thanks Paula. so good 01/15/2008 at 09:59am User: coy from victoria, TX User Rating: thanx again miss paula... Yummy, but weird... 12/05/2007 at 11:47pm User: jamie from Ledyard, CT User Rating: The pie was delicious, it was a huge hit at my family dinner, but the cooking time! Whoo! ATLEAST an hour. Also... you really need the self rising flour. I tried doing the substitute trick by adding the baking powder to my all purpose flour (I couldn't get self rising for some reason, they were out) it doesn't come out right. awesome 11/24/2007 at 07:32pm User: kim from byhalia, MS User Rating: This pie is awesome. I did read the reviews before making. I baked mine for 55 minutes and it turned out perfect. It is better served chilled. Tastes like a brownie. Next time i will probably try walnuts instead of pecans. Yum! 11/23/2007 at 04:47pm User: Marianne from Oro Valley, AZ User Rating: I halved the recipe and it filled a deep dish pie crust. Baked it for 35 minutes. Since I only had all purpose flour, I added 3/4 teaspoon of baking powder to the flour. I refrigerated it overnight, and it was perfect! The next time, I plan to use a chocolate cookie crust. Corrie's Kentucky Pie 10/24/2007 at 09:44pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Wonderful best brownies ever 10/22/2007 at 03:12pm User: Fonda from Ronceverte, WV User Rating: I didn't make pies but opted for sheet pan instead.I thought it would make a perfect brownie with the ingredients listed. I baked it 35 to 38 minutes, it's great out of the oven. If you can wait overnight it is set but still kind of gooey in the middle. It did not run even straight out of oven. I thought maybe I would add an extra 1/2 cup flour but the family said no leave it alone its perfect, so did. Love it Paula, you are my kind of cook. scrumptious Kentucky Pie 10/01/2007 at 09:13am User: dianne from Pawtucket, RI User Rating: I made this pie the day after it aired. I had just gotten home from same day surgery and watching sort a dopey. I memorized this recipe. the following night I had a meeting at church and threw this together . They Loved It!.. I have made 8 pies in less than a month , I tell ya people Love this stuff.. Paula is the Girl.. I would love to spend some time cooking with her.. that would be my dream. try this yum.. I serve it with Cool Whip. Paula Brownies 09/18/2007 at 07:49pm User: Anonymous User Rating: Excellent dessert confused 09/18/2007 at 04:07pm User: null from null, null User Rating: I was looking at this recipe and I was confused. It says 2 or 3 pie shells. NO WHERE does it say it will make enough for two or three pies. cooking time will be much shorter if making 2 or 3 pies and not one deep dish pie. I didn't know until I read reviews, times all over the place but people are not saying how many pies they are making, and deep dish or regular. Cooking instructions are terrible. Scared to try 09/18/2007 at 03:53pm User: mindi from upland, CA User Rating: Is there another way to tell if this pie is done like a toothpick in the middle or something? It seems to be a recipe with a lot of input regarding time to cook. jerseydad 09/17/2007 at 01:41pm User: allan from haledon, NJ User Rating: Attention all chocolate lovers - this one is for you! I added one can of condensed milk to cut the chocolate. This made the mix creamier and richer. Now we can't decide if we like it better warm or cold! It took about 50 minutes to set properly. Delish!! 09/15/2007 at 11:58am User: Anonymous User Rating: This was such a great and easy pie to make!! Great for a chocoholic!! It took just a few minutes to put together and came out of the oven perfect. Great with hot tea of coffee. Kentucky Pie Best chocolate 09/13/2007 at 02:00pm User: Michael from Ft Pierce, FL User Rating: If you are a lover of chocolate, pies and brownies this is the best. Real easy to mix ingredients. Simple recipe. When warm like a pie with a chocolaty center. When put in fridgerator and then sliced it turned into the best brownie ever. It was a soft chewey brownie with a liquid chocolate center. Chocolate Lover's Delight 09/13/2007 at 01:56am User: JAN from Sparks, NV User Rating: I was a little nervous about timing after reading some of the previous reviews. I am at almost 5000 ft. It took the pies 40 minutes. I'm not sure why this is called a Kentucky Pie because it is simply a Brownie Pie to me, but whatever you call it, it is fabulous. Definitely serve it warm and ice cream is a perfect complement to it. Thanks Paula! Jan Sparks, NV INCREDIBLE!! 09/10/2007 at 08:19pm User: Kimberley from Melrose, MA User Rating: Made this pie right after having caught the end of the show, so I had no idea there were conflicting times. I halved the recipe from the web site and followed the directions exactly. I got amazing results! My pie looked just about done after 30 minutes, but I left it in for the full 40, just to make sure it was fully cooked. This is one of the richest pies I have ever tasted and the flavor is indescribable! EASY AND GOOD 09/10/2007 at 04:55pm User: DEANNA from bartlesville, OK User Rating: I cut this recipe in half and made 1 8" pie. Baked it for 50 minutes and it is very good. Keep up the good work, Paula. easy and yummy 09/10/2007 at 01:45pm User: Linda s from mesquite, TX User Rating: It was easy to make Bake it for 50-60 minutes and your chocolate loving family will love it too. Angie P.- Georgia 09/10/2007 at 10:05am User: Angie from Silver Creek, GA User Rating: This pie is wonderful. The cooking times vary due to the variation of the recipe. If you use 2 deep dish pie shells then cook for 50-60 minutes. If you use 3 regular pie shells then bake for 30-40 minutes. I used 2 deep dish pie shells and baked for 35 minutes and it turned out wonderful. Boyfriend ate 1 entire pie by himself. You have to try this recipe and I am sure it will be a family favorite. bad directions for the non professional cooks 09/08/2007 at 09:07pm User: carlee from chgo, IL User Rating: I can't wait to make this pie and I too was very confused with the directions and the amount of time because it conflicted with the show. Please let me know if there is a clarification for this sounds so good recipe. I would love to enjoy it like Paula did on the show. incorrect cooking time 09/08/2007 at 07:36pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I love you, Paula, but this is the second pie recipe I have tried of yours with the incorrect cooking time printed. This pie took 50-60 minutes to cook, as she stated on the show, not what is printed in the recipe. I have this same recipe in a Paula Deen Christmas Cooking Magazine and the time is incorrect in that, too (it says 30 minutes). Keep doing this to me, Paula, and I'll have to turn elsewhere for my recipes. Mouthful of wonderful 09/05/2007 at 03:43pm User: Kathy from Spring, TX User Rating: I made this for Labor Day and everyone loved it. Paula knows best! Excellent Pie! 09/04/2007 at 02:40pm User: Brenda from Austin, TX User Rating: I backed these for two separate events; Sunday School Brunch & a Labor Day gathering. At both events there were rave reviews! It was so easy and delicious. I baked them for 35 minutes and served with Cool Whip Extra Creamy. I have already received requests for the recipe. A definite addition to my recipe collection. I will absolutely bake them again. Excellent 09/04/2007 at 11:32am User: Anonymous User Rating: Made this for the family for Labor Day. Halved the recipe for one pie instead of two. Served warm with ice cream and it was delicious. Baked mine for 40 minutes and it was perfect. Outstanding Brownie Pie 09/03/2007 at 07:15pm User: Janis from Universal City, TX User Rating: Cooked for about 35 minutes and came out perfect. Anyone who fails remember the recipe calls for Self Rising flour. When the recipe aired it did state to cook longer, but any longer than about 35 minutes would have burned the crust and dried out the pie. We topped it with Cool Whip, and it was to die for. A chocolate crowd-pleaser! 09/03/2007 at 07:10pm User: Anonymous User Rating: It's one of Paula's Southern favorites, and one of ours, too! Not a real Derby Pie 09/03/2007 at 04:25pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I love love love Paula, but as a Louisvillian who has eaten "Derby" pie many times over 40 years, this is nothing like the pie we have here for Derby. I am sure this is a good pie, but if you want to try a real one, google Ky derby pie Kern's Kitchen, that is the real magoo. Disappointed 09/03/2007 at 08:20am User: Anonymous User Rating: I also baked this pie according the site directions for 35 minutes, thinking it was done by the color of the crust and the top. It was a mess and undercooked. I am disappointed in the inaccuracy of the instructions since I rely on those and not the broadcast. I will not make this pie again. Best & Easiest Chocolate Pie Ever! 09/02/2007 at 06:42pm User: Fran from Cooleemee, NC User Rating: This was the BEST and EASIEST chocolate pie I have ever made. I have tried alot of Paula's recipes and have loved most of them but this is truly a favorite. These instructions stink 09/01/2007 at 10:55pm User: Anonymous User Rating: "Add flour and mix well, stirring in remaining ingredients except for pie shells. Bake 30 -40 minutes." Bake WHAT for 30-40 minutes? Corries Kentucy Pie is great!!!! 09/01/2007 at 10:39pm User: Anonymous User Rating: This was the best pie it has a crust on top and is fudgy in the middle. I made it this evening and everyone loved it I will be making this winner again Thanks Paula Needs to cook longer 09/01/2007 at 09:23pm User: Anonymous User Rating: I've spent all night trying to make this pie, and after re-watching the episode I found out why it hasn't come out right. On the show Paula says to cook it for 50 to 60 minutes, while the copy on this site says 30 to 40 minutes. The pie has come out as an uncooked, runny mess, and putting it back in the oven does not work. With the cost of the ingredients and an unhappy family this one just hasn't been worth it. QUESTION 09/01/2007 at 11:27am User: Rose Marie from Liberty, IL User Rating: Paula said to cook this pie at 350 for 50 to 60 min. but the recipe said cook it for 30-40 min. Which is it? I am sure I will knwo by looking at it as it bakes but it is confusing for those who cook by instructions only. |
