I appreciate learning how to prep these. I followed the recipe exactly. They were moist, but were disappointingly bland. I really didn't taste the orange or the vinegar. I noticed that some of the people who gave it 5 stars used their cooking talents to tweak the recipe to their preference. If you follow the recipe as shown you will understand. IMO, the recipe needs to be adjusted.

we found this recipe to be simple with exquisite results. only made 2 birds used 1/4 each balsamic and orange concentrate. added a nice huge chopped garlic clove. marinated the birds with half and glazed with the other half when we turned down the oven. the leftovers would be great shredded over a salad with some Mandarin oranges red onion and sliced almonds, sorry to say it won't make it because we keep munching on it. can't wait to make them again. would be great for entertaining because it's so easy.

Simple and Savory

Just finished enjoying this recipe for Christmas. I did allow the hens to marinade for approx 1/2+ hour before cooking as others have recommended. Also a touch of orange zest helps to draw out the orange (in the marinade, not rubbed on.) A spritz of orange and orange slices/rosemary as garnish were great accents when plated.

Pretty decent with some tweaking

I was worried about the reviews saying it was bland, so I just marinated them overnight. I also added some garlic and orange zest ot the marinade. I thought they were really good!

Would Rate Zero if I Could

This was totally tasteless. I served it at Christmas and I was happy that I had also baked a ham so I had a back up. Otherwise, dinner would have been ruined.

Family loved this!

I made this Christmas for my family and they loved it! It was quick and easy. I have two kids, 8 and 12 and they ate everything on this menu. I will definately make this again.

Surprisingly bland

I'm so disappointed in this dish. Normally I roast cornish hens like I would roast a chicken and they are fantastic. This sounded so good and looked so wonderful on the program I just had to try it. You'd think that such strong flavors like balsamic vinegar and orange would really pop but this was just about flavorless. I even added extra salt and pepper. Bad thing is that I chose to serve this as my Christmas dish. Huge mistake. For what it's worth the Jaques Pepin potatoes Rachel made on this same episode were delicious. So I guess there's that.

Loved it!

I just tried this recipe and I thought it was great! The color was just amazing and the meat was so juicy! I do agree with some reviews that say the flavor wasn't really there with the glaze, but I tried marinating the meat in the glaze for 30 minutes and then I cooked according to the instructions. Then I took all the drippings and glaze from the pan that dripped off and I reduced it to make like a Balsamic-Orange BBQ sauce and it was great on the chicken.

Super easy and delicious

I made this recipe last night for a holiday dinner and everyone at the table loved it. The balsamic vinegar added a nice tart sweetness and beautiful color to the bird. I allowed the glaze to marinate the hens for half an hour prior to roasting for extra flavor. I also think you could just reduce down some orange juice instead of purchasing the concentrate for the glaze.

Very satisfying and easy

First of all, I had no idea Cornish Game hen was so yummy! I have discovered a whole new kind of food to play with. It is chicken but moister and more flavorful. OK, this recipe - I prepared it exactly as Rachel instructed with one exception. Before I painted on the glaze, I salted and peppered the undersides and pressed in a little chopped, fresh garlic. Other than that, I did exactly as instructed and it was yummy! My guests loved it as well. The one thing I would do for an elegant dinner would be to halve the hens after butterflying them. They took up a LOT of room on the plate. Otherwise, they were wonderful.

AMAZING!!

Although the chicken was moist, it really did not have much flavor to it. Any suggestions for letting that marinade really marinade?

This is fast and easy and makes a really nice presentation. Mine took a little longer than the 45 minutes so give a little extra time (maybe 5/10 minutes) in your planning.

Juicy Juicy Juicy!!!!

This was terrific! I butterflied the hens, salted/peppered then put the glaze on them while allowing them to come to room temperature as I prepped the rest of tonight's meal which gave the meat a chance to marinate and really soak up that vinegar and orange flavor before roasting. I did add a tablespoon of honey to the glaze before putting it on the hens right before they went into the oven because I love the honey combination with balsamic vinegar then covered them w/ foil for the rest of the cooking time. The meat was exploding with juice and the flavor was insfused throughout. My family LOVED this meal! I served with Rachael's butternut squash risotto, which was a perfect compliment.

So, so disappointed!!

I was so excited to make this dish and it turned out so bland and awful. Thank goodness I wasn't expecting company. The potato side dish is excellent though.

I have served these several times. The hens are nice change from the ordinary and the flavor of the orange balsamic is very nice and fresh. The taste is great and they are so easy to prepare.

Really Moist

I read the other reviews & marinated the hens for about 30 min.I added one clove of garlic & orange zest. The chicken was so moist that the meat fell off of the bone. I would baste the hens while baking next time for that really golden look.

easy and tastes great

No flavor

The hens cooked nicely and were moist, but absolutely none of the orange-balsamic vinegar flavor came through at all. I marinated the hens for about an hour before cooking, but that didn't help much. I would have rated the recipe higher if the flavor would have come through.

Hens a hit for Christmas Dinner

I tried all new dishes this year for Christmas dinner. The cornish game hens came out very juicy and flavorful. The family loved them. The only thing that I would change is that I would serve 1 cornish game hen per 2 people (plenty of meat to share.) As it turned out, there was plenty of leftovers (and this is never a bad thing,) but I could only fit 2 hens per cooking sheet (vs. the 3 on the show,) so it took longer to prepare 6 hens.
