I really like it. It's the green beans, Any time of year hot or cold weather it is wonderful. It is so quick and easy to make, and a hit every time.

Interesting! Never put sugar in my beans, but it makes sense. I used a leftover ham bone from our Easter ham (Honey Baked. Keep in mind that the exposed ham looses it's flavor though - so if you are adding sliced or cubed ham, I would just add it at the end. The ham on the bone with skin on keeps it flavor.

This is my "only" recipe for green beans. So very easy, but yet, so full of flavor. True southern food!

I have been searching for a green bean recipe for years that tasted like my great grandmothers.....AND THIS IS IT!!! I placed all ingredients in a crock-pot and let simmer on low for 8+ hours. I used fresh green beans and substituted splenda for the sugar. It was amazing and my guest raved about it telling me "I am not leaving without this recipe". Honestly, there aren't enough stars to rate this recipe!

If there was a zero star rating I would give it! I followed the recipe and ended up with a vile smelling pile of mushy beans. The ham hocks were disgusting, too. The only thing edible was the potatoes and I could have saved myself a bunch of time and energy by par boiling them directly. Skip this recipe is my advice, I wish I had listened to the prior reviews that said it was terrible.

It was really easy to make and, I dd not really taste the sweetness, I guess it balanced out with the salt and pepper.. I also used a little garlic and onion powder..and they were awesome, the pot was gone at the end of dinner....so good job Neelys, you never let me down.

I have always used hocks but with canned green beans and their juices, simmering all day, so I decided to try the fresh beans while they are in season and I just loved the variation with water. I did add a chopped onion with the ham hocks in the beginning! The sugar is a new twist to me as well- don't forget the pepper!!!!

My family loved this dish, especially the green beans. The best green beans we ever tasted. Thanks for so many great recipes.
