I wanted a recipe for a slow cooker or to cook in the oven--I suppose this could be adapted. Someone suggested baking it 5 hours but didn't say at what temperature.

My first attempt at pork shoulder and will definitely not be my last. Absolutely delicious. And the barbecue sauce. . . . .!!!!!
I made this as a sandwich and put the sweet and spicy colesaw, over the sauce, over the pork. I should not have to say anything else!
I am slamming in LA!!

Who would have thought such a simple rub would be so good! Yes Null, use the 1 1/2 cups paprika! Actually, I had the play "spice fairy" because I didn't have quite enough paprika, so I added some cayenne. THe pork was very flavorful & tender. I served it with Swet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce on whole wheat rolls topped with coleslaw. This is a keeper!

On the web (foodnetwork.com/recipes/neelys/neelys-pork-shoulder-recipe/reviews/index.html The recipe for the BBQ seasoning states:
3/4 C sugar
1 1/2C Paprika
3 3/4 Tablespoons onion powder
Do you really mean 1 1/2 C paprika???

This recipe is wonderful. To Lane in Tx. when you go to buy your pork look for a Boston butt. It comes from the shoulder of the pig. If you have any questions talk to the butcher at your local grocery store and he/she should be able to clear up the mystry. There are also whole fresh pork shoulders available. Your local butcher is your best bet. You are also better off at a "regular" grocery store. The meat departments in places like the Wal-Marts with a grocery department don't have a "butcher" back in the butcher dept. cutting the meat. It all comes in pre-packaged and I try to avoid it.
For Kathy in Linconton, NC and others with questions the Neeleys were using an indoor smoker. You can get them at places like Costco and Sam's Club and even in some hardware stores. You might even look at some of the places like Lowe's or Home Depot. Anyway, they come with a rack for placing your meat on. You SOAK the wood chips in water for probably 30 minutes or so before you put them in the smoker. You place the rack that comes with the smoker over the chips and place the mat on the rack over the chips to smoke them. You need to wrap the whole shebang with foil tightly and they should be fine in the oven.
