Here is how to properly bake a potato:
(choose a baking potato like a russet

    1. turn your oven on to 425 (1 or 2 degrees off will not hurt your potato
    2. Wash your potato then pat dry
    3. PICK UP A FORK and POKE YOUR POTATO with a few hole (only go in about 1/4 of an inch
    4. Wrap the potato in foil
    5. Place the potato on the middle rack in your oven
    6. Bake for 45-60 minutes until tender

Its easy...no need for all these weird needles, nails, fingers, or whatever it is you people tried.

I didn't know what to use to poke the holes with, so I just used sewing needles. I didn't want to heat up the oven so I microwaved the potato, but forgot to take the needles out. Bad idea. Sparks were flying everywhere, and my thumbs hurt because I didn't use a thimble.

My oven is broken. Will the baking part still work if I wrap the potatoes in foil and put them out in the sun?

My temperature knob on my oven wont stick to 425. Is it ok if I set it to 426 or will that burn the potato? Thanks!

I am still having difficulty poking my baked potato. I tried creating a facebook page for it and poking it but it still did not help but after reading the comments I found several helpful ideas.

I didn't have any appropriate poking apparatuses handy, so I grabbed a #2 pencil and went buckwild. I felt sorry for the potato sitting there by itself, so I whipped up some bacon and an aromatherapy towel for sides.
    Pros:
Potatoes and towels - who'da thunk?

    Cons:
Watching my date spitting up pencil shavings all but ensured there wouldn't be a second date. So much for a homemade meal.

This recipe could a little more detail. Like some of the other commenters, I also had technical difficulties with hole-poking. I used an apple corer to poke large holes all the way through the potato in several spots, and the outcome was not ideal. Help!

Nowhere does it say HOW to poke holes in the potato!! I tried several times jabbing my finger into it, all I ended up with was a severely sprained index finger. I eventually figured out that a hammer and nail would do the trick. All is well now, right? WRONG!!! After cooking the potatoes I served them to my hungry guests (who were horrified when they saw my horribly disfigured finger. Imagine my surprise when they began eating their potatoes and I saw the looks of disgust I saw on their faces. Excuuuuuse me, no one at Food Network told me I had to clean the potato first!!!!! I thought the stuff on the outside was supposed to add flavor, much like fat on the outside of a steak. Thanks Food Network for ruining my dinner party - and for losing use of my finger for a week or two. To top it off I recently found out you can use the *microwave* to cook these potatoes in a fraction of the time. You know, that contraption you used to make your famous Microwave Popcorn recipe?!?!?!

Please follow the directions carefully! I tried making this but forgot to poke holes in it and then the potato exploded in my oven.

It's a good idea to print it out and keep the directions on the counter to review while making.
