I have been making this for a few years and have received rave reviews every time! I saw it on the show and went out that day to get the ingredients as I was hosting a Wedding Shower the next day. The dish went over so well that several of the guests asked to take some home to their husbands. LOVE IT!!! A perfect blend of flavors and it's so easy to make!

Do not do this to bratwurst. There is no need for EVOO in this recipe. Grill or pan sear brats (hence the nonstick pan then soak them in a pot of beer and onions. Top with warm kraut on a crusty brat bun.

I personally don't like sour kraut, but my friends and family loved this dish. I used polish sausage instead of bratwurst. That was only because the amount of people I had to make this for and brats although tasty are exspensive.

Excellent recipe. However, hard to find sweet red pepper relish.

My grocery store did not have the red pepper relish, but they did have pickled red and yellow peppers, so that's what I used. The extra color was beautiful, and the flavor was perfect. My husband and father both had seconds, but the kids were only so-so.

I made this quick, easy recipe as part of an Oktoberfest theme night. My family loved it! Instead of pumpernickel, I used crusty Portuguese rolls. I also simmered the brats in dark German beer instead of water and added bits of bacon to the sauerkraut. It made a hearty, tasty meal. Everyone raise your steins to Rachel!
