Cooked this recipe as a vegan. Sauteed 2 field roast vegan sausages then followed the recipe up to the chicken stock and added 2 veggie bouillon cubes. Otherwise did all as indicated. It was AMAZING. Yum.

This was delicious! I made only 2 minor changes. 1. I used a can of fire roasted diced tomatoes instead of just plain diced. 2. Instead of sugar, I used the same amount of brown sugar. Will keep this recipe on file for future use, as I call it, a Keeper!

I went looking for okra recipies because my wife brought home a big bag of okra from work, and I had no idea how to prepare it. I read the recipies for both fried okra and okra with tomatoes, and decided on the fried okra. I used corn meal to coat the okra, and fried it in peanut oil, and my fried okra was bland, boring and I really didn't like it. I decided to try the tomato based recipe tonight, because I had plenty of okra left over after last night's disappointment. The result from this recipe was amazing! I know that bacon makes almost everything better, and I now also know that tomato and okra are a perfect pairing of two very different types of vegetables (okay, a fruit and a vegetable. If, like me, you are looking for a way to use okra, try this recipe first. If you have never had okra before, go out and buy some and try this recipe. Paula has done it again with another easy and wonderful dish made out of basic and inexpensive ingredients.

This was absolutely wonderful! I saved the crunchy little bacon bits and put them on top, when the okra and tomatoes had stewed enough...
I have to admit, I have no idea what Chicken Base is... but, when the pan was a little dry I used some chicken stock I had in the fridge to deglaze the pan.
There is not one bite left.. perfect recipe! Thank you.

The flavor of this recipe is amazing! The bacon and chicken base really give this dish a great of depth of flavor. I use peppered bacon and it seems to work perfectly.
I've made this at least 10 times now and it's always a hit. Even my kid sister who usually only eats fast food and Pop Tarts actually loved it (after fake-gagging at the idea of eating okra of course. I forced myself to bite my tongue after she asked for seconds :
Thanks Paula, yet another great dish!

I also used liquid smoke instead of bacon, fresh okra and fresh tomatoes and it was delicious! My other modification was adding a little garam masala and indian curry since I was serving this with Indian food. We had this with rice to have a tasty vegetarian dish. Yum!

Yummy! I love this dish. I am vegetarian so substituted tempeh & liquid smoke for the bacon. I used fresh tomatoes & okra and also added a hot pepper, oregano & thyme. This was amazing.

This recipe is fabulous! It reminds me of my grandmother in Alabama and going to visit her every summer when I was growing up. Thanks! Paula

I used my own tomatoes from the garden instead of can. It was really good and will make it again for this summer. I pour it over a bed of rice.
