Anyone who says this is a bad recipe isn't using good ingredients. Buy some good gruyere cheese, use homemade stock, and some nice crunchy bread, and you can't go wrong. Such a simple recipe but it's done so, so well.

it would be an understatement to say that I was disappointed in this recipe. I have made french onion soup before, and I love this comfort food. Unfortunately, I felt that this recipe fell flat. The flavors were simple and uninspired, It tasted like it was missing something. I highly recommend the Barefoot Contessa recipe instead - it uses cognag and bay leaves - MUCH better.

This is a simple and delicious recipe. I top this with some home made garlic croutons and freshly grated gruyere cheese for a great meal on a chilly day. I had a few servings left over from a batch and it sat in the fridge for 5 days. This was the best yet!! The flavors melded together wonderfully.

This recipe does not take long to make and is full of flavor. Serve this with a small salad or a toasted sandwich and what a meal! I have made it several times and is my standard French Onion Soup recipe.

This soup is wonderful and easy...takes some time for the onions - 1 hr. I used sweet yellow onions; gave it a great mild-sweet onion flavor; used 1 tsp dried thyme, 1/ and 1/2 beef/chicken broth; plus 2 more cups than called for to thin it out a little. I doubled the sherry for even more depth of flavor. The first bowl I had I put toasted sourdough slice right in with the soup and then broiled with the cheese; next time I will put the bread on the side. Provolone cheese is great if you don't like the sourness of Gruyere.

This recipe is delicious...really delicious. I prepared a veal stock using sherry, brandy and thyme and of course sweet vidalia onion. Once I got started the recipe was really easy to prepare and did not require a lot of time. My nine-year old thinks this soup is better than the restaurant!!!! I have this recipe in my "recipe box" and will definitely be making my family and friends happy in the soup months ahead.

One of the best ever french onion soup's I've found. I top mine differently but the soup is outstanding, tasty, rich brown broth.

Fantastic. Made this for my family over the weekend and now I'm going to make it again on a Tuesday night because it was so good and so easy! I'm thinking about making a double batch so I can have some all to myself tomorrow for lunch!
