I give these cookies a 5 for taste but a 2 for the process. Unfortunately I didn't leave the butter out long enough to be considered "room temperature". However, after realizing the dough was too crumbly and scrapping the entire recipe, I decided to put the dough back in the mixer bowl. I realized the butter wasn't soft enough. I decided to add about a 1/4 cup of hot water and this was the trick! It became a soft ball of dough because now the butter was a little melted. I completed the recipe successfully and the cookies came out perfect! I would suggest adding to this recipe either melting one or two sticks of the butter and/or adding a 1/4 cup of hot water. I love these cookies. I remember tasting them a couple years ago and I finally got to use my fancy mixer to make these. Thanks!

I have been making thumbprints since I was a little girl. My mother had the best recipe around, until she lost it. Ina's recipe is fantastic. I absolutely love these cookies, they are deliciously chewy and moist. Ina's recipes are truly the best!

I give these 5 stars for taste! and probably 3.5 stars for success. Don't get me wrong. I've made these the last three years for Christmas and they're now my favorite holiday cookie, however, I struggle with the crumbliness of the dough, even if I chill it. I've tried chilling it for more or less than suggested, too.
These are the absolute best!

I followed the recipe exactly and wound up throwing the batter out as it was too crumbly to even form a ball let alone roll out - even after chilling. Disappointing!

Great recipe! These are too good. Before the jam I sprinkled decorative green sugar on top and used red plum jam. Soooo good and so pretty.

Run, don't walk, to your kitchen and make these cookies! So easy, so delicious. Follow the recipe exactly as written and you will not be disappointed. The first time I made these I think my butter was too cold so the dough was very crumbly to work with. The second time, I took the butter out of the fridge the night before I made them and the texture of the dough was perfect. I've given these as gifts and everyone loves them. I'm making another batch right now!
