I cooked the rutabagas with smoked turkey but added diced onions, garlic powder, lemon pepper and pouch of Swanson Flavor Boost 100% Concentrated Chicken stock. These additions enhanced the flavor. The mashed rutabagas were even better the second day.

Honestly this was fine, but nothing to write home about. I like rutabagas alot and this was just nothing special.

I so enjoy mashed rutabagas and these were just great. I have a tip that has worked well for me for quite a number of years.

Rinse waxed rutabagas in cold water and wrap in two paper towels. Put in microwave. Cook 4 min to soften the wax for peeling or 8-10 or until done, then proceed with your favorite recipe. The Wax will absorb into paper towels. I usually change the wet paper towels one time and never walk away from he mw. So simple and a great shortcut. Tillett1

I hate to give this such a low review. I made this on Easter and nobody liked it including myself. Even when cooking, it did not smell pleasant. Perhaps it's an acquired taste. I've never had them before. I liked them raw better.

I loved these without a doubt!! I grew up in the Eastern part of NC and my mother cooked them a lot... I hated them... maybe because she made me eat them! I saw Paula cook them the other week and thought I'd try them now as an adult! They were fantastic! I am now living in the more Western part of the state where not many of had them or heard of them!! They love them now too!! Brings back memories and they were easy to peel too!!

When I was little my Mom made these only for Thanksgiving. I loved them and called them "orange mashed potatoes". Funny thing was, she told me they were turnips. When I took over the huge family crowd for the feast, I went out and bought turnips. They were great, but I couldn't figure out why they wern't ORANGE! I will add the ham hocks next time I make them. Otherwise, the recipes are the same. Thanks for helping to bring back the memories.

Delicious alternative to mashed potatoes! This was the first time I had ever tried rutabagas, and I had no "streak-o-lean", no bacon, and no ham....so I boiled the cubed rutabagas in water with diced onion, smashed garlic, and salt and pepper. Mashed them with butter, and they turned out great!

After watching your show the other morning, I left to go grocery shopping not even thinking about rutabagas. After seeing them in the grocery store, I decided to try your recipe and I am so glad that I did. I followed your recipe with the only change being I used 5 slices of bacon instead of the streak o'lean. I love to try new things and with a household of men, I am very fortunate that they are always willing to try something for the first time. Love you Paula...keep those wonderful recipes coming.

After having never tasted rutabagas in my almost five decades of existence, I really did not expect to like them. What a surprise! They were such a nice surprise from mashed potatoes, and I love that the dish doesn't contain the added fat and calories of cream. I'll definitely be making them again. (We used a smoked ham hock instead of the strip-o-lean, which I'd never heard of until this episode, to flavor the water.

I had the honor to serve as Miss Georgia in 1968. One of our questions during the judges interview was "What is your favorite food?" I told them the truth... rutabagas and biscuits! Many were from out of state and none of them had tasted rutabagas! Their expressions still make me laugh 42 years later and I still love rutabagas. And Paula's recipe tastes just like my Mother's!!! Lord I love Paula!!!!
