I received so many compliments when I made these cheese straws for thanksgiving. They are elegant and simple!

These were so easy and yummy. Even my 16 month old kept wanting more. The only thing is that they went flat and didn't keep the twist. I will plan of making some for Thanksgiving.

These are delicious. I took another reviewer's suggestion and refrigerated them on the cutting board after cutting and before twisting. I also made them half as long as called for. It really BUGS me when people rate a recipe they haven't even tried. Like someone here said "looks good" and gave it 3 stars. Please only rate after you have actually made the dish.
One more thing - Emily, it's people like you that give southerners a bad name - snobby, to be exact!

I thought they were pretty easy to make but they didn't have a strong enough taste. Also, you need to twist the dough a lot and don't stretch it.

These cheese straws are soooooo good! The only thing that does upset me about having them on this website are IDIOTS like Emily from Georgia - if I didn't have Southern friends myself, I would think they're all moronic like you, Emily - and where, oh where, did Ina Garten call these "Southern" ??? Oh, wait - you might have thought that because you are...an IDIOT?? How sad.

We loved these--they were very tasty but I didn't have Gruyere so I substituted with a finely shredded Italian cheese blend (mozzarella, asiago, etc. They were a little hard to twist, though as the dough had gotten warm from handling. I would recommend putting them in the refrigerator for 15 mins or so after seasoning and cutting them before twisting them.

As Southern Americans, we have a hard time actually calling this a recipe for "cheese straws". However, there is no denying that this recipe is delicious. We made them for our son's first birthday party and they were well received and stood up well over time. A dash of red pepper (ceyenne, chilli powder, whatever really brings out the flavor. Anyway, I don't know how Ina Gartner is passing these off as traditional southern cheese straws, but if they are referred to as Cheese "Twists" they are worth the effort for a party.
