this does not taste like the apple crisps that have a ton of sugar, it is quite an nice balance of flavors. i love cardamom, it is such an enhancer in baked goods.

After reading some of the other reviews here I decided to cut back the 1/4 cup lemon juice to 1/8C. I also soaked my raisins in rum overnight and added a tbs of cinnamon to the apple mixture to give it a more traditional flair.
Served it warm with ice cream and received rave reviews at dinner last night. I will certainly be making this again very soon!

Too much lemon zest hid the flavor of the apples. Also, the crumb topping was flavorless. When I make an apple dessert, I want it to taste of apples and cinnamon. This one didn't.

Wonderful recipe. Ecxept there is too much lemon.Cut 1/4 cup lemon juice to 1/8 cup. Also Layer the apples up, Don't spread them out, They shrivle up. Otherwise, wonderful recipe!!!!

I modified this a bit by adding a table spoon of pure vanilla extract (1 whole vanilla bean is even better if you have them on hand and one half teaspoon of ground ginger. These added ingredients combined with the cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg is simply sensational! Thanks Paula!

This was good. The topping was delicious. I found the body of the crisp, the apples, a bit tart with all the lemon zest and juice. I will make this again, but will back off on the zest about 2/3rd and 1/2 the lemon juice. My friends that liked tart things loved it, others added carmel wich was agreat accompanyment and seemed to tome down the tartness. Paula is the BEST!

Wonderful......Best topping I've ever tasted, nice and crunchy. Taste your apples first to see how sweet they are. The Jonagolds I used were extra sweet so I sugared to taste. Also, Cardamon might not be your cup of tea, so go lightly on first try. I baked this at 350 for 1 hour. Family couldn't get enough of it. Thanks Paula
