Made these today, even my somewhat picky husband rated these excellent. Unlike some other posters, mine held together just fine, they were a bit hard to cut through. Next time I'll double and spread in a 13x9 pan. I suspect these aren't going to last around our house. I followed the recipe pretty much exactly for the first time. Next time I'll begin with variations.

Does anyone know if I can substitute agave nectar for the honey that is called for in the recipe?

I cooled mine in the refridgerator in the pan because I couldn't wait to try them. I also weighed the ingredients. Some of the other reviews said theirs fell apart. I do not claim to be a superb chef or anything but maybe cooling them in the refridgerator helps. They taste fabulous! When I make them again I will probably use unshelled sunflower seeds. Alton used shelled ones on the show so that is what I did, they were a little too crunchy for my taste. I think this recipe would be easy to modify with various indredients. (flax seed, choc. chips, pumpkin seeds, etc.

I have never had a granola bar this good before.

We tried a little nibble while it was cooling. It was so good that we became impatient and tried to turn it out of the pan before it cooled completely. Part of it fell apart because of this, but it was still just as delicious. We were able to take the loose pieces and put them in a bowl of milk and enjoy it just like cereal, which was an added bonus.

These granola bars are just too damn good. I can't wait to make more.

Ok these are really good!! I did food process the stuff before toasting like someone else said(good ideaalso the fruit:separate of course.I used buttered parchment paper to line pan and it didn't stick at all plus I used a buttered spatula like rice krispies.I will be making more though and trying different things besides just fruit so my kids will leave the fruit ones for me and my kids willhave there own kinds

I made some adjustments - used peanut butter instead of butter, added 3 ounces of marshmallos and put in 3 ounces of chocolate chips instead of the fruit. Very delicious. Can't wait to make another variation.

Instead of rolled oats, I used Uncle Sam Wheat cereal (no toasting required slivered almonds, chopped dried cherries and flaxseed instead of wheatgerm.

A tip I got from a different recipe was to use wax paper or buttered hands to really press the granola down into the pan. You want to compress it before you bake it. Then it cuts nicely after cooling.

So very good, so very versatile, and so easy! First time I started the sauce before I had all fruits & nuts ready to go. The sauce reduced too far so I ended up with yummy granola cereal. Now I get everything ready before I start heating the sauce. I sometimes substitute soy protein for the wheat germ, almost always use ground flax seed, maybe add some powdered vitamin C or some cinnamon or nutmeg. Think I'll replace some of the honey with molasses this time. While I now get 'bars' consistently, they are always different because I change up the fruit, nuts and other ingredients a bit. Keeps it interesting. I take one to work almost every day. They hold up just fine for 2 weeks without refrigeration.
Thanks for a great recipe Alton!

I had many of the problems the others encountered first time around as well. So I added a handful of minimarshmellows to my second batch which i made last nite. The marshm's pretty much melt & disappear when baked and of course add to the sweetness -so watch out on the other sugars! But along with my handful of coconut in the second batch I was able to score bars after 30 mins and lift out in tact using alum foil method that another person suggested. This morning I easily finished breaking apart and storing in indv. plastic sandwich bags. All in all the jury still out as they are sticky good, nutritious yet heavy filling and probably full of calories .....but healthy good still in many ways better than a slice of pie lol. I will see how they store in the days ahead.
