I made this bread tonight from PD's cookbook. The recipe in the cookbook calls for 1/2 tsp. nutmeg instead of allspice. And I didn't put in the raisins. Other than that, I followed the recipe to the T, cooking it just a little less time (45+mins. At first bite, I wondered if I did something wrong so went on the website to see what the reviews were. After reading the reviews and realizing I didn't make any mistakes, I took a few more bites..it started to REALLY grow on me. Then I decided to get out the thick apple butter from our last trip to the southern Apple Barn restaurant. Oh my..... I think I will be making another loaf tomorrow to share with my mom!! Watch that you don't overcook it - it really is moist and delicious. With a little apple butter it is transformed into something you almost can't stop eating!! This is definitely a keeper and I will be making it on holidays and company breakfasts... so simple to make..has the depth of a holiday dish.

I am a huge Paula Deen fan but this recipe was definitely not my favorite. The bread was extremely tasteless and I would NOT recommend baking it.

This recipe is absolutely tasteless and bland! I received The Lady & Son cookbook for Xmas and decided to try this without reading the reviews before hand. BIG mistake! It went from the table to the garbage can and left me extremely disappointed. Sorry Paula, you missed the boat on this one!

I really enjoyed this bread. The only changes I made were a instead of 1/4 cup of dark brown sugar, I used 1/8 cup of dark brown sugar and 1/8 cup of light brown sugar and b I only baked it for 45 minutes. I think 40-45 minutes would be a much more accurate bake time.

Although the bread isn't as flavorful as other apple breads, you can definitely tweak the recipe to make it better for you. The apple butter and cream cheese spread is strongly recommended!

I usually read the reviews before making any of these recipes but I just adore Paula and really wanted to try this bread and it was a last minute decision. Man o Man, is it aweful. I even doubled the recipe and my husband, who eats anything, told me to throw it away. I was pure aweful. It is definately lacking in sugar. I tried to fix it with a applebutter and creamcheese mixture but really there is no helping this bread unless I just start over and as others have suggested add more sugar. I will do it again however I will add more sugar and lesson learned,,,,,always read the reviews. Still a fan Paula xoxo

I used this person insight and when I added the 1/2 C brown &1/2 C white sugars boy did this bread take on a life of it's own. I've already made 4 loaves since 11/7/09 (today's 11/12/09 and people are still bugging me to make them a loave.

"I saw Paula fix this on TV, it looked amazing so I looked up the receipe and read the reviews. Thank heavens.. This is what I did to the receipe. Firt the receipe is missing SALT. I have never baked anything in my life without salt. I put about a 1/4 tsp of salt. I put in 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar. I took out the allspice (I don't care for it instead I used nutmeg. I also chopped up a large apple and added it. I used 3 Tbsps of milk. I mixed everything up and it was really dry so I added about 1/2 cup of water until the batter was really nice and moist. I turned the oven temp down to 325 and increased the cooking time to about 75 minutes. I just took it out of the oven. I just tried a slice and it is AMAZING, it is moist, sweet and wonderful. I think the salt totally brings it all togeter. I will definately make it again. I hope this helps everyone to figure out what was missing.

I thought the recipe was great only instead of plain applesauce I used chunky so there were nice chunks of apples throught out the bread...Also after I baked it I drizzled a home-made caramel sauce over it...DELICIOUS! WE LOVE YOU PAULA!
