Everyone who ate the first batch I made using the original recipe complained that they didn't taste like gingerbread at all. I made a second batch doubling the spices, and they just bagan to have a ginger flavor. While the cookies rolled out well, they were quite dry (my husband called them "chokers", and I believe they need either less flour or more shortening. In short, I recommend trying another recipe rather that making all the modifications suggested by other reviewers. There are better ones out there.

I made Sandra Lee's semi-homade ones first and those didn't turn out so great, so then I tried these. The texture was perfect! They were soft, easy to chew cookies (not the kind you might break your teeth on, but the spices were lacking. I had read the reviews of others here who said the same thing and so I added about 1/4 tsp extra for each spice (as a p.p. did and that STILL wasn't enough! Sandra Lee's gingerbread cookie flavor was perfect but the texture was off and she put 2 TABLESPOONS of pumpkin pie spice in her mix whereas Paula Deen didn't use any. I think I'll try mixing the pumpkin pie spice in even though the dough is already refrigerated. All in all, this is a good recipe but add the 2 T of pumpkin pie spice and you'll hit it out of the park! Good luck!

This is a great Cookie. I did take the advice from the multiple comments and cut back on the flour. I just made it an even 3 sifted cups. I also added 1 TBS of vanilla to moisten the dough a little as well and to give it that awesome vanilla flavor. Rather than doing men and women, I elected to do drop cookies with a nice royal icing. I did 1 heaping TBS drops. The first batch I did at 11 min. They seemed to be a bit firm. The second batch I did at 9 min. These were off the hook! Tender, moist and a ton of flavor. My little ones found them a little spicy, so next time I will cut the ginger in half. All in all, GREAT recipie!! Thanks for all the comments to help me make a decision on how to adjust the recipie.
Merry Christmas and Happy new Year to all!

Nice cookie overall! I would suggest baking them a little less than recommended they tend to dry out quickly!

If you follow the directions carefully and know when to stop adding the dry ingredients, then your cookies will come out terrific. You have to save about 3/4 cup of the dry ingredients to flour your surface. I only baked them for 15 minutes at 350 in my electic oven.

Theses cookies were just okay. The dough was a little dry so I just added a little water. The cookies did not have that much flavor and I would not suggest making these cookies.

I think that Paula D assumed that people just KNOW that flour should be sifted before being measured. After reading the reviews, I figured the mistake that people made was that they didn't pre-sift the flour prior to measuring. I sifted first, and the cookies came out just fine. The kids had fun with this project, and liked the mild flavor, although I prefer a little more spice. The dough was nicely workable, we let it rest on the counter for a little bit while we had some lunch. We made simple royal icing, like the recipe, just a little milk added to some powdered sugar, and had a ball decorating.

I really enjoyed the taste and texture of these cookies!!! After reading comments, overall, I would agree with that the dough was too dry. However,I thought the flavors were perfect and wouldn't change those...many people said they would add less flour to make my dough less dry...however, I just added dark corn syrup...it did the trick and the dough was perfect for rolling out and making great, soft and delicious cookies! This is a perfect recipe for the holidays!!!
