This soup has a good flavor and the lime sour cream is very good. However, I quick soaked my beans and they still took 7 hours to get tender. No idea how 2 hours would ever make them tender. Will soak my bean overnight next time.

this soup is pretty good, however my beans took 4 hours to get tender. perhaps the dry beans need to soak in water overnight? also, don't forget to get bay leaves -- they are missing from the ingredient list, but are in the recipe instructions. probably not THE ultimate, but good.

After visiting Costa Rica, I've been in search a good black bean soup recipe and I so wanted this to be it. After 2 hours, the beans weren't tender at all so I let them cook another 30 minutes. They still weren't done, but my family was getting hungary so I pureed all of the soup as opposed to just to 1/3. This left me was something akin to refried black beans so we ate it with tortilla chips. The flavor was good. The crema is delicious and I added a dollop of homemade pico de gallo. Overall this good but not the ultimate.

I made this soup and my family loved it. It is better than the black bean soup at our favorite Cuban restaurant.
