I browned the fat from a ham steak in the bacon grease, instead of using salt pork. When I added the potatoes half way through cooking, I put the cut up ham steak on top of the beans and served it as a main dish. You could use any leftover ham, of course. The chicken broth adds so much flavor to this dish. Thank you, Paula!!

This is one of the best recipes I have seen and used yet. My kids went nuts and now insist I make this every Sunday when they come home for Sunday dinner. We love it!

When I was 15 (I'm 25 now, I went to a restaurant in the south that served a dish like this, and ever since I've told several people that the green beans in the dish were the best I've ever had. I've searched for the recipe before with no avail, but after making this recipe I can say that I've finally found what I wanted. Since its hard to find salt pork up here in Yankee country, I used a smoked ham hock instead. Thanks for the great recipe Paula! You have made me one happy girl!

My husband's grandmother makes really good green beans by just using canned green beans and cooking them all day long in salt pork. The first time I ate them I thought they were delicious. My husband and I saw this episode and made them tonight. We both thought they were just as delicious as his grandma's and we're also using fresh vegetables. I know for a fact I will be making this again and again. Thank you Paula!

If I could give these green beans more than 5 stars, I would. In almost 60 years, these are the best I've eaten. Easy to make, one pan preparation. Can't wait to share these with my friends. Thanks Paula, you're the best

I was raised in the south my grandma made everything from scratch and used all fresh foods. Not a lot of canned foods or precook dinners. In all my 24 years I have never eaten a better green bean and don't imagine I ever will. This recepie was so simple and the first time I made it was for Easter dinner. Needless to say everyone loved them to death, I wish I could take full credit. This recepie has become a staple for our family dinners ever since. Paula you're my hero Thank You!

Our youngest of four sons will not eat one vegetable, green beans. Until now! This recipe has changed his opinion and now I can't make them enough, we have already had them 3 times in the last two weeks, and plan on having them again tomorrow. With the green beans coming from our garden we are sooo glad we have found a recipe to get him to eat green beans thanks.
