I made this for New Year's Eve 2010. Had a small gathering of a few friends. Everyone raved! There's definitely some merit to some of the comments made in reference to the over abundance of spice/heat in the dish. Luckily, we were all preferential to spicy food. Not to worry. You can always scale back on the amount of pepper flakes, peppers, pepper sauce, etc., to suit your own tastes. Enjoy this dish!

This recipe was perfect in flavor and yet still really simple to make. I did make one change to it though just because I work and go to school full time and needed to save time. Instead of making the grits from scratch I used quaker's instant grits and just added cheese to them. They were still really delicious and it also allowed me to make the grits fresh the next day at work when I brought the leftovers. The only thing I would change about the recipe is the amount of oil and butter in the beginning. Other than that thought it was amazing and I did not find it too spicy at all. In fact I went back and added more pepper flakes to it. The only reason I can think of why it might be too spicy for everyone else who reviewed it might be because I could not find piquillo peppers where I live so I had to use the suggested substitute of jarred roasted red peppers. Either way it was delicious and definitely a keeper!

I, who modify everything I make, did not, and will not make any changes to this one. Mr Hernandez has earned his way into heaven with this (front row, center.

This dish is fantastic. I've had it at a few different Friday's in South Florida...and the flavor has been very consistent.

My wife & I have made it at least 7 times...and it is spcier at home...but that what good beer is for. It is really nice to find an actual spicy recipe. So many things listed as spicy...are not. Because of that...there are so many who complain about how spicy this dish is.

Lose the milk...grab a cold beer and enjoy the spicy goodness!!

I tried this dish, however, it was way too hot for my husband and me. We like hot, but this was over the top. Next time I will have to cut down on the cayenne and red pepper. I wonder how Fridays made theirs? Another question I have is that I made the grits, but the recipe said almost 50 minutes cooking time. Mine were done in a few minutes (yes, I used what the recipe called for. Anyone else have problems?

I had this at the Friday's in Bridgewater, NJ and they must have really toned the spice down, because the only spice I tasted came from the andouille. I was quite disappointed.

Very disappointed after the great reviews and winning the showdown. Yes, you want spicy, but this was ridiculous. I made this recipe exactly as written EXCEPT after tasting it I left out the last dose of cayenne and red pepper when cooking the shrimp. this was WAY TOO spicy. . .actually made my lip burn and had to gulp milk as well as put milk on my lips. Maybe it is becaue i made my own Cajun spice (fromj a recipe onthe web and most of my spices are pretty new so they have not lost any of their heat. Whatever the case, the family agreed that while it might be OK with about 1/2 the spice, this was just too over the top. Next time will cut the spice in the shrimp by 1/2 and will not put cayenne or pepper sauce in the grits. I want to try it at TGIF. I'll bet they really toned down the spice.

Did the chopping prep ahead and assembled while guests were here. Very good. Cut down the red pepper flakes to 3/4 tsp in grits and shrimp. Great alternate to the expected chili during the Super Bowl. Great as leftovers for lunch the next day.
