    I enjoy Ina but, this stew witch I followed exactly was to pungent from the wine. I think if you used the exact recipe using Stout beer instead you than could rate this a ten!

    Never could make a beef stew that was really good till you shared this one. Company also loved it, even my young neice(she doesnt' like real food

    My son & daughter-inlaw came to visit for labor day. I wanted a dish that would hold well in the oven and this was a smashing success. My son said it was the most tender and flavorful chuck he had ever had. My daughter in-law said it was her favorite of the whole weekend.

    The recipe looked delicious. BUT..... Although the steps to prep were easy, the prep time was long (marinate, then flour and brown the meat, chop and saute the vegetables, then cook for several hours. Even when using high quality ingredients including a good bottle of wine, the recipe turn out terrible. Our Labor Day feast was voted a "thumbs down" and to "rip-up the recipe". We threw out the 5-quarts of stew and ate cereal.

    When I saw Ina make this it looked wonderful. I could not wait to try it. My dh who loves tomato based beef stew said it wasn't that good. My daughter would not even try it. Sorry Ina, usually I like your recipes but this one I will not make again.

    A cold rainy Sept. day here in the northeast. I am not a huge stew lover but even I had a craving for a nice warm meal today. Followed the recipe with 2 slight alterations: I added 1 can beef broth~ 1/2 when i stirred the stew at 1 hr cooking time, and the other 1/2 when the stew was done (it was a bit too thick, that's why I added it I also added 1/2 pound fresh sugar snap peas in pods at the end of cooking time instead of frozen peas. Great reviews from all!! Definitely will make again.

    I have made beef stew many different ways, and this one is by far THE BEST!
    I can always count on Ina for such wonderful recipes that turn out great every time. Thanks, Ina.

    I don't understand the negative comments. This was great. Didn't have potatoes so add sweet potatoes instead. In oven for 2 hours.

    Sorry Ina. This wasn't one of your best. The prep time was long but not complicated so I decided to try it. The house smelled wonderful and the stew looked beautiful. Unfortunately the taste wasn't there. My husband tried it and immediately asked for something else. Very unusual since he eats just about everything I prepare. One saving grace was that before I discarded the contents of the pot I retrieved the potatoes which were delicious. This one is not going into my recipe collection.

    A much needed week-long cool front and the possession of all the ingredients convinced me to prepare this recipe. I am so glad that I did. The prep time was well worth the effort and the meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender. My husband considers himself a culinary snob and he could not stop offering his compliments. This recipe will become a fall/winter staple in my household.
