Minimal ingredients, minimal prep, tons of flavor... Love it! The only thing I did differently was tore the bread into bits prior to topping it with cheese.

This is by far one of my favorite recipes to make! It turns out fantastic every single time! I do make sure to cut the onions very thin and I took some recommendations from other viewers. I saute the onions for about 10 minutes and then add a little of the beef broth and saute for another 10 minutes or so. I also add a little worcestshire and red wine to the soup. On high for 4-6 hours works out just fine. Also, for monetary reasons, I use provolone or mozzarella cheese instead of the gruyere. It is truly one of the best things I have ever made and a wonderful comfort food on a cold winter's day!

This recipe uses the onions raw and they don't carmelize in the cooking time specified. In order to get the traditionally sweet flavor of a traditional FOS, I actually ran the crockpot for 36 hours on low (kept resetting it and adding more broth/water as necessary to give the onions time to really cook. The result was good, but if I make it again, I'll definitely carmelize the onions first and then add those to the crock pot.

couldn't be easier and taste great. everyone loves it. i do usually sweat my onions prior to cooking in crock pot. cuts down on cooking time. i have you provolone , mozzarella or swiss if you are cutting costs with $5 gasoline; but the gruyere is still the best. sometimes i broil the brear to toast it before topping it with cheese.

I watched Sandra make this on her show and it looked very each. I really loved it. Added a little red wine and some worcheshire sauce to it and it was delicious.

    Would make it again.
