I agree with the many who found this cake disappointing. I have made it twice - after the first time I thought I had made a mistake, so I tried it again several months later being careful to follow the recipe to a "t", and I had the same disappointing results. I won't make the mistake a 3rd time. The cake is dry, tasteless and does not rise very much. I agree the frosting is very good, but a rich decadent cake, this ISN'T. And for those who chide the cooks who didn't have success baking this cake need to back off because I am not a novice cook/baker either, and this is not a good cake.

The cake is not the best I have ever had, but the frosting is fabulous!! I use it often. and pretty much have it memorized.

I made this recipe for a dinner party I had the other night; great reviews from everyone. I took the advice of one review and kept a close eye on the time. At 25 minutes, the cake was done. I also added 1 tsp of instant expresso to the cake mix and the frosting to enhance the chocolate and used bittersweet chocolate instead of semi-sweet. I will definitely make this again and again.

The icing is tooooo sweet! Talk about a sugar high! Less confectioners sugar next time. I'm dizzy from all the sugar!

Decent cake. The icing was delicious! I think it was a bit dry but the not so sweet taste of the cake combined with the sweeter icing made for a nice combination. I would make it again and take it out of the oven a few minutes earlier.

Being a brand new cook, this was my second cake and I have made it 3 times now - each time a brilliant cake, thanks to the recipe not me. In my oven the sponges were ready at 25 minutes. Hint: the icing goes from runny to too thick depending on how quickly u make and apply it - so be careful there. So I was surprised to see a few complaints here from more experienced cooks. I used the recipe from another site and I wonder if something was lost in translation from the original UK measurements and ingredients to US ones, e.g. is "best quality 70% cocoa dark chocolate" the same as "good quality semi-sweet chocolate"?

I have made this several times. Always great and always requested for special occasions. The key is to have everything at room temperature. Enjoy!
