Ellie has never let me down - every single recipe I've made from either of her cookbooks has been a winner, this one included. I substituted semi-sweet for the milk chocolate (not a huge fan of milk chocolate and did add the pecans; I feel they really do make these cookies special. The texture is fantastic - chewy and soft with a nice crunch from the pecans. Previous reviewers have mentioned not being able to get 24 cookies from the recipe - I was able to get 24 nicely-sized cookies with no problem. Just make sure each cookie is 1 Tbsp of dough.

Just took some out of the oven and they are wonderful!! They do not bake up flat even at my high altitude. I live at 5600 ft above sea level and these are nice and fat!! This will be my secret, my husband has high chol. and hates anything he thinks I have tried to make healthy. But he loves these! Thanks for an excellent cookie recipe I won't mind making for him and his sweet tooth!

These turned out great!! I didn't have any whole wheat pastry flour, however, so I just used regular whole wheat flour and it seemed to work fine. I also used about half a bag or so of white chocolate chips and half a bag or so of semisweet chocolate chips instead of the chopped chocolate- LOVED IT that way; the white chocolate added a great, slightly different sweetness to the cookie that balanced perfectly with the richness of the semisweet chips. Plus, it made for a very, very chocolatey cookie- 4 oz. of chocolate total would not be nearly enough, at least for me. : I didn't add pecans since I'm not a big fan of them. Also, the salt shouldn't really be listed as "optional"- it always brings out the flavors when you're baking.
Another note- mine cooked for slightly less than 12 minutes; more like 10-11ish. But my oven cooks kind of fast, so that could just be me. Plus, I like a chewier cookie. These were delicious!

These are delicious! And to think they're on the healthy side -- awesome! My mother, whom I lost last summer, was a licensed dietician. All her desserts -- like peach bread pudding or custard -- had healthy elements to them and relatively low sugar. She would have approved of this recipe, I think, and I'm going to email it to my 2 sisters and teach my granddaughter how to make it when she's old enough!
    Thanks, Ellie

I am making my second batch tonight. I have made a comittment to cooking healthier for my family and this is a wonderful recipe. Modifications: I used only regular whole wheat flour sifted 3 times as suggested earlier and added a teaspoon of instant coffee. My children absolutely love these cookies and I don't feel guilty about making them for my family.
