The texture was light and flakey but this was not the texture of a scone.
There was barely any flavor at all except the flavor of butter.
It used alot of ingredients to create a disappointing regretable result.
I have a cranberry scone recipe that is excellent and this just does not compare.

I made these scones the correct way (my first time, and agree with most of the comments about the scones needing a little bit more sugar. However, the second time I made them, I used mini chocolate chips and some dried cherries instead of the strawberries and they were perfect- with no added sugar! It all depends on what you flavor with. Great recipe, Ina!

These were light and flaky--delicious! If they are to be eaten with jam, they are good as is. If you want to eat them alone, I'd add at least 1/2 C sugar to the dough instead of the 2 T called for in the recipe.

This is the fisrt scone recipe i have ever made, but i do agree they were not quite sweet enough. i know scones are not meant to be a sweet dessert but they just needed a bit more! I added a powdered sugar icing to the top and they were perfect but i also used fresh strawberries which actually worked really well! i will make them again but i will add more sugar and way less baking powder!

Love this recipe. I tried them with just raisins and nuts. They where good (not sweet enough but next time I will try blueberries or strawberries. I couldn't find a square cutter so I just used a square plastic container and it worked great. I will definity make these again.

I have been a fan since the beginning of Barfoot Contessa on the Food Network!! Ina, you cook the way I do....I LOVE cooking for family and friends. My hubby and I were married the same year as you and Jeffery. We were in the military for a few years and we had friends over entertaining all the time.....haven't stopped! This recipe for scones is excellent!! We love them w/everything!! We just remodeled our old farm house and now I have an AWESOME kitchen and three beautiful grandaughter who love to help me cook. This is the first recipe that I start then off with and I am giving them ALL Ina cookbooks this coming year for Christmas because they are fans too. These scones are wonderful and flaky, tender and you can put anyting in them you like. They are perfect for breakfast, lunches, and tea parties! Thanks Ina......we adore your show!

This was my first time making scones from scratch. I couldn't believe how easy they were to make. I gave them to my husband to take to work. He let me know they all loved them and would like more in the future. Thank you Ina. I have been a huge fan of your show and recipes for many years. I have you on Tivo and that will be the first thing I turn on when I sit down to watch tv at night. I think I have watched each episode at least a dozen times. Never get bored with them.

I've experimented with a lot of scone recipes and although this one is OK, the texture is a bit off and they are not quite sweet enough. As one other reviewer said, more like a biscuit. When I make scones, I use equal parts cream cheese and butter instead of all butter. Makes a richer texture and bakes up less like a biscuit. I do like the dried strawberries, though my favorite is Almond Cream Scones. I roll the dough into a long narrow oblong. Combine 8 oz. cream cheese with 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 tsp. almond extract. Spread the filling down the length of the dough, then fold over & seal. Cut into equal squares, then each square in half diagonally. Brush the top with egg wash, then sprinkle with a mixture of slivered almonds and a bit of sugar. THEN (and this is important, brush with the egg wash again to hold the topping on the scone. Talk about YUM!!

These were fantastic, I used dried blueberries soaked in fresh orange juice and it was perfect. I'll try the strawberries next time.
I am surprised so many people would expect scones to be sweet - they aren't supposed to be. - they aren't donuts or cake, they are scones. Crumbly and light. All 5 of my family loved these - some with and some without jam.
Thanks Ina- you ROCK!
