I wish I had read the reviews before making the rice, I would have used chicken broth instead of water. The yellow rice does give a nice presentation. Maybe some minced cilantro would have helped too.
I used canned beans and the black bean recipe was pretty good. A little grated cheddar jack melted on top makes a pleasing presentation and add a little flavor.

I was hoping that the black beans would actually be spicy...and while they had a bit of a kick, they weren't my kind of spicy. I forgot to put the bay leaf in the rice, but that actually worked out. I put a tbsp of the tumeric and stirred it really well before the rice started to boil. I used brown rice and it seemed to come out well...I was hoping this would be tasty enough for a main dish (one of our meatless meals, but I think it needs to be paired with chicken enchiladas, which I'll probably make tomorrow! It gets 3 stars because it's not inedible, but I probably won't make it again.

Spicy black beans were great but the rice was bland.

The blanace of flavors in this meal is superb. Go for it! And if you don't have time to soak the beans, use canned... and I use Chicken Broth instead of water.

I've never been disappointed in a recipe by Tyler. I made this rice tonight for my family, exactly as written, and I had to dump the whole pot full of rice into the trash and make something else. The amount of tumeric MUST be wrong, perhaps it's supposed to be 1 tsp. Foodnetwork needs to remove this recipe or correct it.

for a long process of soaking, then waiting for the nice slow food to cook, it was extremely disappointing today. It is 14 degrees outside today, i really wanted a nice hearty meal with flavor. Flavor caught the train out of town cuz it wasn't to be found in the rice dish or the black beans.
This one is a stinker Tyler, but I still love ya mucho bunches. :

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! I didn't make the rice, not because of the reviews but because I actually prefer white rice w/black beans. I did add more jalepenos, a little sugar, & an extra bay leaf because that's the way I prefer black beans. This is my new way for making black beans!
