Made this for a family get together...everyone loved it! I added carrots and celery as well and it only enhanced the flavor! It was not to thick as others commented nor to salty...I added a small amount of salt but allowed everyone to salt their own and it was perfect! Cornbread was the finishing touch! I will definitely make this again!

I've been making this soup since it first appeared in Ladies Home Journal in the '50s but lost the recipe and couldn't remember about onion. I never added other veggies and always used a ham bone. My husband and I raised 6 children, and it was a family favorite! Thank you, Paula for having it on your website. You saved the day. I'll eat some and freeze the rest in single servings or share with friends. Add slaw and cornbread, and you're eating the food of kings!

This soup should be mandatory for all Senators. If they dined on this it would put them in a better mood. I LOVE it! Of course, the fact that I added a little sherry (and thyme didn't hurt. Really, though, it's great. Paula, my love, you've got another winner!

I live in Michigan and we get our navy beans in big glass jars (drain the goop and my mom always added celery, onion and carrots. I use organic chicken stock instead of water. Spiral sliced leftovers are just perfect. Thank-you Paula

I made this with great northern beads and it turned out great. The mistake I made was not to test the beans for being done befor I went ahead and finished the soup. When I reheated the soup I just let it cook longer and it turned out great.

this was a very flavorful bean soup. I simmered the beans and a ham bone for several hours. Half a recipe was plenty for a family of 5.

This soup is delicious. Like other reviwers mentioned it is thick, and I definitely had to thin it down with chicken broth. It's a soup that you're likely to eat a cup of rather than a bowl; just because it is so thick and filling. I used 4 cans of navy beans and pureed two....then simmered for 30 minutes. It was very quick, easy and delicious!
