Have made two batches so far and given them to my pharmacy group and friends. Have two more batches in refrigerator, and will probably try some with appricots and pine nuts or whatever. Just love the cooky, especially with the icing. Everyone so far has really enjoyed them. I plan to keep on giving. My husband is helping with the rolling out, then slicing. Bet he'll like the idea of freezing the cherries, cranberries, or whatever, prior to the chopping. Thanks loads, Giada. Your recipes are always a hit, and you're so precise; love watching you, also when your aunt is on. She sounds like some of my family did from Romania. I lived in Italy for a year and loved it. Thanks again.

I was the beneficiary of tasting these at a friend's holiday gathering, and give them two thumbs up! The cherries added a nice chewiness to the nut shortbread, and the drizzle of icing was the piece de resistance for one's sweet tooth. Can't wait to try the recipe myself!

Loved this recipe! I would recommend doubling it if you're making them for a group. I loved that I could make the dough ahead - the finished product handled freezing well too.

This recipe was so easy to follow. I like how the cookies come out pretty uniform since they are cut from the log. The bake time seemed right for my oven. I first checked them at about 12 minutes but left them in for another 3 and they were perfect. I thought they tasted good without the icing but even better after I iced them! I also like how they are more like a shortbread cookie in texture. This recipe is a keeper! I'm going to be making them again to give as gifts for Christmas.
I would also suggest following the suggestion of another review below who said to freeze the chopped cherries to make them easier to mix into the dough. I did this and I can see why it makes a difference. The cherries were really gummy after I cut them but hardened up nicely in the freezer and mixed in easily.

This is a beautiful cookie! The only suggestion I might make about the preparation of this cookie is regarding chopping the dried cherries; they were very gummy by the time I had chopped them, and I was worried about how well they would incorporate into the dough, so I laid them out in a stoneware plate and stuck them in the freezer while I mixed the dry ingredients in to the wet ingredients. By the time the dough was ready for them, they had frozen hard enough that they blended in as easily as the chopped almonds. The icing recipe states that it makes enough for both varieties, this one and the suggested alternate recipe with dried apricots and pine nuts; I had doubled the recipe, and I had only about 1/2 tablespoon of icing left when I had finished. I can't wait to try that alternate recipe as well, and I'm thrilled to add this cookie to my collection of cookie gifts for family & friends!

Did not alter recipe but did check cookies before the 15 mintues baking time was up.Not soon enough. Baking time was way too long. Too crispy and not chewy results. Check after 10 minutes (or sooner. My oven is accurate. Recipe for icing was way too much quantity for 24 cookies. Make 1/2 icing recipe. Otherwise, a very satisfactory tasting cookie.

I made these cookies last year. I susbtitued dried cranberries for the cherries. They were a big hit. This is only cookie I'm making again this year other than chocalate chip and peanut butter.

I love your recipes, Giada, but these were just ok, no WOW factor at all. During the holidays I bake many cookies and these were one of them...they always seemed to be the last ones left on the cookie tray.
