Holy Moly Batman!!! This is sooo good!!! It was fast, after the beans soaked, and was very good. Will keep this recipe just the way it is.

My grocery store only had green lentils so I used those. I let them soak for only 15 min as other reviewers said that with green lentils, there's no need to let them soak. Well, maybe it would have been a good idea anyway, because my husband and I had so much GAS after eating this soup! Nevertheless, it was delicious and we will definitely have it again, only we'll be sure to soak the beans and rinse them! :

I followed some previous reviewers' suggestions and sauteed the onions in the ginger and garlic a bit first, then added some chicken stock and plenty of salt to bring out the flavors. I didn't whisk the lentils, instead preferring their original texture. I also added more cumin and some garlic and onion powder and some more grated ginger at the end just to deepen the flavors. What a fantastic dish - I will be sure to make this again! Lentils are so good for you and I was looking for a great recipe for them. Once again, thanks Aarti!

This soup was especially good the next day. I had some leftover sour cream so I used that as a garnish as well. Thanks Aarti!

Never had any Indian food I liked. That just changed with this soup. I didn't have any cumin seeds so I used 1/2 tsp ground. No tomato or chili, so I used a can of Rotel. Hit it with my immersion blender and simmered to thicken. YUM YUM Thanks Aarti. Can't wait to try more of your recipes.

Maybe I missed the boat, this dish had no flavor. You definitely need heat from the peppers in the recipe. Maybe my spices didn't bloom as per the recipe. It had a water down taste and I needed a lot of salt. No sure what went wrong.

I made this soup tonight, and we enjoyed it very much! I did not have a serrano chile, but used a good pinch of red pepper flakes which gave it some heat. Also, I used an immersion blender for a couple seconds instead of whisking, and that broke it down slightly. I will definitely be making again!

I'm not Indian but did go to an Indian boarding school and have always loved dal (red lentil soup. Just never made it. I was so happy when Aarti won and showed us this recipe. I just made it and had an Indian neighbor taste it and she couldn't believe it was my first time making it. It's all thanks to Aarti who makes it look so simple and easy. My hubby really loved it too which is a big plus.

This is the first time I have made lentils, which I don't really like, but this was so good. Everyone loved it. I just had to add a bit more spices to the soup, a little ground cumin did the trick. Next time I might saute the onion, garlic and ginger to bring out their flavor.
