The garbage disposal ate my beans, I cooked the soaked beans in a crockpot on high for 6 hours, they were still tuff and they tasted like candy. This is the first 5 Ingredient Fix recipe that I have not loved.

If you use northern beans, they wont cook all the way to "tender". You must use navy beans, as they are smaller and dont have the thick skin like northen beans. Recipe tastes wonderful!! I add breakfast sausage to mine to accompany the bacon.

I made these beans twice, even purchasing new beans and soaking more than 24 hours. Beans were tough and crunchy even after cooking for more than 6 hours. I also tried the brisket (which I have made using other recipes with great successand it was tough, dry and basically inedible. I had to throw out both beans and brisket. What a waste..

At the time I made this, the recipe had just aired and there weren't any comments yet, so I discovered the hard way that I needed to use caned beans. I tried the dried navy beans-twice-and couldn't get the beans to hydrate. The sauce was outstanding both times I tried to make them, but the beans were inedible as they were still hard. I will try them again as the sauce was amazing, but I also suggest using canned beans. If anyone has any tricks for getting the navy beans to rehydrate I'll gladly take them. I cooked the first batch for about 7 hours before calling it quits. I just couldn't get the beans to cooperate.

I loved these beans! Thanks to all who commented, I planned ahead and cooked for 8.5 hrs. The flavor was great! Can't wait to try this in the crock pot and let them cook overnight. Will definately make again and again. I love simple recipes with few ingredients that make me look like a good cook:

I made the whole meal as per the "Big State BBQ" episode. The beans were very good and the flavor was a surprising change for my surprise guests. I felt the bourbon flavor was very prominent. I've learned to read reviews before using ANY recipe online and went with canned beans. That was my ONLY substitution. Made in the crockpot for 5 hours on high. The rest of the meal was fabulous and it all pulled together nicely.

Usually don't review if I haven't followed the recipe exactly but after reading reviews (and knowing my beans had to be ready at a certain time, I decided to follow recipe with the exception of using two 40 ounce cans of northern beans to expedite the cooking time. So my review is of the sauce and I have to say, it was delicious and enjoyed by three generations of family who enjoyed the different spin on baked beans.

These beans were great, the flavor was out standing. I will make they again, but you have to soak for 24 hours and cook for at lease 6 hours. Here is a tip I would like to pass along, be sure you check the date on you beans, if they are very old beans they will not cook up like they should. Old beans will take twice as long as they should to be come tender.

Those of you who had to cook the beans longer than the recipe calls for and those who made an alteration, or felt like they had to, good...You are now learning to cook independently and creatively! Beans don't all grow the exact same way --- some come out perfect, you know like our kids, and some aren't near as good as our kids or beans.... Add a little of this or that, change this or add time here...add what your mom used to add....all makes this your recipe helped by Claire. I make the canned baked beans the same way only far less cooking obviously. I do add a little catsup though and less mustard since I like my backed beans SWEET...

    Happy Cooking!
