I've been making this for many, many years, calling it creamed hamburger over noodles...I brown the ground chuck, drain, add 2 or 3 T. butter and add chopped onion...saute until onion is almost translucent, add 3 cloves of fresh, minced garlic (or more, to taste when garlic is fragrant, I add 3 T. flour, some thyme, salt and pepper and stir gently for a few minutes, and then add the milk, stirring gently until it comes to a slow boil and thickens...if it becomes thicker than you want, add a little chicken broth....yes, chicken broth...serve over extra wide al dente egg noodles...add chopped fresh flat italian parsley over top and WOWWWWW! At least it has always been a favorite of my family...hope you will try and tweak as you see fit! :-

I have never had it with hamburger before, it was really good. I added a few extras. Didn't have any chicken base, onions, peppers and potatoes so used a full can of chicken broth, about a Tbsp. liquid smoke and a few good shakes of hot sauce. I only gave it 4 stars because of my not having all the ingredients including seasoned salt (used good sea salt I will make this again...and again and again : Will have enough left over to use on top of scrambled eggs in the morning.

After watching Paul's Coffee Shop on Guy's Triple D show my husband and I drove to Fountain Valley just to try this place out and found it to be a great spot to eat. My husband was in the Navy and a cook and had made several patches of SOS aboard his ship. We also took our Granddaughter Makayla and she wants to go back again. Thanks for having it on your show.

Awesome. Finally one of my favorite comfort food recipes. Easily made at home. And as good as any SOS I've had.

I saw this on Triple-D and me and my GF had to try it. BTW I cut the recipe in half because there were only three of us and we still got five servings. Since we had this for Dinner the one night we used the leftovers for breakfast in the morning. I didn't have chicken base, so I used boulion powder instead. The recipe was good, but different from the Navy Version my dad loves.

No potatoes or peppers, your recipe must have come from a Coast Guard mess hall.

I have not made this recipe. That said, I've got to tell you that I've relied on SOS for many, many years. We all know what "SOS" means when it comes to food, but this is a very adaptable staple that can meet the tastes of many tongues.

Start with your simple basic roux (butter, flour, milk and then adapt with seasonings and meat. For example:

*Thinly sliced ham and sprinkle in some shredded cheddar

*Left-over roast, some beef stock and serve over potatoes

*Crab meat, lime juice, serve over white beans and/or tortillas

*Left-over spaghetti sauce (if you have any serve over garlic bread

I could go on and on, but once you've done your roux, only your imagination and ingredients remain.
