I took this dish to a dinner where I was asked to bring a side dish. I followed the directions with the following changes/additions:
I used real Barley only because I had some. It adds about 45 minutes to the cook time.
I added 6-8 cloves of garlic to the butter that I cooked the mushrooms in.
I drizzled about 3-4 tablespoons of Soy Sauce over the mushroom onion mix before I spooned in the barley.
I added the dill at the very last moment while it was hot but before it was served.
I sprinkled some fresh parmasean cheese over the top.
The Soy Sauce (salty, Dill (Bitter, and Carmelized Onions (Sweet really combined well into a great but competing taste. I took home just a small amount as people had seconds, and had two requests for the recipe.

This is an incredible side dish! I love it. I made a few changes tho! I added garlic, and tonight I am adding zucchini and ground beef. I can't wait to try it.

I didn't know if this dish would have enough flavor to it, but it was really good. The caramelized onions really worked. Will definitely try again.
