The base cookie is nothing exceptional - an average ginger bread taste though it is better than most. The taste of ginger overpowers the taste of garam masala ( I cook with it four times a week so i would know the taste. However the chocolate icing makes it better. my variation is: I made the chocolate topping with white chocolate chips as per the recipe and replace 1 tsp of water with 1 tsp of lime juice and added 1 tsp lime zest (Lime and ginger go well together.
    a. top the cookie with the white chocolate topping.
    b. top the cookie with the white chocolate topping and candied fennel seeds (you can get them @ indian store - called mukhwas sauf - it is colorful like sprinkles so adds a festive touch.
    c. some cayenne pepper topping and then topped the cookie (1/2 tsp for 1/2 batch
    d. cayenne pepper topping with the candied fennel.... this was the winner.
If anyone tries the variations I would love to know your opinions.
With the topping I am now upgrading it to a four star

I loved these -- a great addition to the oversweet Christmas platter, with all the spicy notes.

These were the most exotic cookies I have every tasted. There were tons of flavors going on here, and I know they would definitely make a good conversation piece at any get together. They tasted like something you would be served at a very fancy restaurant for dessert, just a single one of these cookies on a fancy plate with a shot glass of milk. In fact, that might be their downfall and the reason I gave them a 4 instead of a 5. I only wanted one. It is not a cookie that you want to go back for more. One is just enough. I think this recipe is worth storing in your recipe book, but you would probably only make it for a very special occasion.
