I was amazed by the simplicity and elegance of this delightful stew while watching Aarti making it on the Food Channel this morning. I realized that I had everything in my house to make this recipe, with the exception of the butternut squash. After reading the reviews, I was inspired to try to make it with zucchini, which I had in abundance. I have to say, I thought that some of the reviews were hyperbole, but after one taste, I knew what all the fuss was about This is an AWESOME meal that I hope to make again for my family during the holiday season when we all tend to gather. I'm certain that everyone will love wonderful miix of heat and distinct flavors and textures in every bite!

This soup was amazing!! I love Aarti's show and this is the first thing that I have made from it. One of my favorite of all times. My Indian friends have told me that Toor Dal is not pigeon peas, but it is yellow lentil, so considering the title of the recipe, I used split yellow lentils. I also used yellow mustard seeds because that is all that I had, and left out the tomato because when I was shopping I accidently left out the tomato!! This soup is so flavorful and delicious, thank you Aarti!!!!!!!!!!!! You are truly a Food Network Star!!!

This stew is so good that I will be making it whenever butternut squash is in season and I am hungry for some good Indian fare. The combination of flavors is hard to describe because they play off of each other in an amazingly subtle way. Except for substituting yellow split peas for the pigeon peas, I followed the recipe exactly until the stew was completely cooked complete with tempering ingredients and lime juice. Before adding the honey, however, I tasted it for seasoning and decided to skip it and to add another 1/2 t. red pepper. This small adjustment brought the flavors of sweet, hot, sour and salty to just the right balance for us. Used the cilantro as a garnish on each bowl of soup to preserve its fresh taste and color. Served with naan bread.

Really great dish that has so many levels of flavor! This is a hearty dish although we made it in summer - & I guess it's perfect for lunch or dinner any time of year! I substituted w yellow split peas only because I could not find "pigeon peas" anywhere! ( I would love to try w actual pigeon peas - i did a google search on pigeon peas & found they are supposed to be a bit sweet - sounds interesting! Anyway, a great dish and another example from Aarti as to how complex and delicious Indian food really is. Thank you again, Aarti :

LOVED IT! My family loves soup and I was doing an Indian inspired menu and decided to put some soup on the table as well. I am so glad I did because it was my favorite part of the entire meal. DELICIOUS. I used frozen grated coconut and split green peas for the lentils. This will def be in my winter soup/stew rotation!

Six stars! Amazing! A new comfort food! I left out the coconut because I'm not a fan of it, but it was just so gooooood and satisfying. I also made a second batch using pumpkin and it was great. I made third batch with pumpkin and added garam masala and that was really good as well. Indian and Indian inspired cooking has been a long time coming, but I'm glad it finally made it to the Food Network. I usually cook for my staff every 2-3 months and this recipe will be the one I use to satisfy my vegetarian constu=ituency. Thx much Aarti:

This stew is our new family favorite! The sweetness of the coconut mixes so well with the spices. My only problem with it is that it doesn't make enough leftovers, so I double the recipe!!!!! I've tried quite a few of Aarti's recipes now, and every one is great! Next I'm gonna try to make paneer!! Love you Aarti and keep those great recipes coming!

I love Aarti! So far, every recipe of hers that I have tried is so easy and delicious. This stew is no exception. I made it with coconut milk because I didn't have shredded coconut, and it came out great. I can't wait for my husband to taste it! Thanks, Aarti!
