Sorry, Amber. There is absolutely no way you could mess up this recipe. I've thrown all of these ingredients into a baking dish, baked it and it still came out great. I think you need to work on your technique.

Great with honey baked ham and steamed spinach on the side. Used baking potatos since this is all I had. Slice the potatos with a 4mm blade in the food processor and put them in salted water to season. Steamed the potatos in a bamboo steamer to precook. Meanwhile made sauce adding a couple of garlic cloves. Use rice flour instead of wheat flour since husband can't eat gluten. Used 1 cup heavy cream and 1 cup 1% milk. Added 1 cup smoked gouda cheese for a smoky flavor with the sweet ham. Excellent!

Great potatoes although I did alter the recipe with sliced onion and poaching the potatoes in the milk before laying them out in the casserole. Adding nutmeg just before putting it under the broiler was a nice touch.

I added garlic salt and pepper, but it still wasn't very flavorful. I would probably have preferred to melt the cheese with the cream sauce instead of putting it on top. The cheese was more clumpy than creamy. It was okay, but I will keep looking or fall back on my mom's creamy potatoes au gratin recipe.

When I made this recipe, I put it under the broiler for a couple of minutes after it was cooked because my husband likes the top extra crispy. He said, "I think this might be better than my Moms" which is huge because he loves his mother's potatoes au gratin recipe. We are definitely going to make this again. It was very easy to make- remember to cook the potatoes first!

my family and i thought we would try something new for thanksgiving vs the traditional mashed potatoes we were accustom too so after a request from my father we set out and found this recipe following it perfectly with the execption of adding more cheese.. and much to our suprise it turned out horrible. everyone tried it and not a person at our table was in pressed or had anything to say. they just werent good. we tried to liven them up with more spices but there was no saving this terrible recipe. please do better research than we did. stay far away from this bland tasteless side dish!

My husband requested Au Gratin potatoes with dinner last night. I found this recipe and since I had all the ingredients, I went ahead. So easy. I par-boiled the potatoes whole and then finished cooking them in the oven, as directed. I like the top to be golden bubbly, so I left them in the oven for about a half hour while I finished the rest of the meal. He loved them! Next time I might add some rosemary or garlic for flavor.

The person who posted the comment about needing to cook it for an hour and how they need to proofread and gave 1 star can't read because the recipe says use cooked potato thats why it does not take long to bake. Duh, now who can't read.
