I had never tried this before but it was so easy to make and tasted amaaaazing.

I tried using less butter though but the egg stuck when I flipped the toast. I put a slice of cheese which was nice too.

In my family this is referred to as Egg in the Nest. I am suprise to see this because I thought my family was the only one who made this. It is very simple to make and we used a glass rim to cut the hole.

Great recipe! I learned this on a camping trip with friends and used to make this for my grandma when I was a kid during sleepovers. I will always remember this recipe!

I have had this since a child, (70 yrs. We called it egg in a basket. I use
bacon grease which I keep in the refer. Spread bacon grease on
the bread, both sides before cutting. Adds more flavor, and the bread
    soaks up the grease.

I have been using this recipe for 50+ years. I was told that it was called "Chuck-wagon eggs" , "Cowboy eggs" or "Hole in the wall eggs". Chuck-wagon eggs because of the need for the cook to be able to fit large quantities on his grill pan. It is funny that this dish has so many names. I also saw the egg dish in the movie "Moonstruck". I love rye bread so that is what I use. I like to cut it thick and toast it before adding it to the pan. I sometimes add cheese and herbs.
I love the show "The Pioneer Woman" and the way she presents and cooks.

My family has made this tasty breakfast for years and we call it "Frogs on a lillypad." Perhaps she mentions this on the episode, but don't forget to also brown the cut-out bread piece. It's great for dipping into the not-yet-set yolk.
