This is so good. The only change I made to the recipe was using Brown Basmati Rice instead of white. I enjoyed preparing this recipe and eating it. Thanks for sharing Aarti :

My red onions never caramelized & I only used one - 3 seems excessive! It was a flavorful dish. I also added an extra cinnamon stick, about 5 cardamom pods & 2 Indian bay leaves for extra flavor. I only cooked my lentils for about 10-15 mins because I didn't want them to get mushy when I put them in with the rice/water. The rice & lentils were cooked perfectly & all of the water was absorbed in exactly 30mins, plus 5mins of steaming :-

I did a trial run to see if I will bring this to a potluck sunday. OMG!!!!! it is wonderful! So delicious I cannot stop eating it.

the onions did take me longer to cook into that deep caramel color but worth it. Next time I will allow them to get even a bit crispy for the garnish.
My only glitch is that I left the rice to simmer and should have stayed near to watch it. There was a burnt layer on the bottom but I was able to get 90% of the pan out with no burnt flavor. SO delicious and hearty, the pine nuts and lemon take it to the moom!
Each time I walk near the kitchen I dip in for a few more spoonfuls. Hope there's some left for dh's dinner!

I will be making this for all future pot lucks hoping for leftovers..............

I guess I didn't use high enough heat to caramelize the onions, since they never got that rich, deep color. And, since I was cooking the lentils at the same time, and the onions took so long, they got kind of mushy (20 min. not long enough to tenderize lentils. But, the flavors were good, and I'll try this one again, with hopefully better results.

Excellent, came out wonderful and this is a definite keeper. Trying to have a meatless dinner several times a week and this now replaces a beans and rice meal. Not sure why some folks don't think this doesn't have much flavor, it's just the opposite. OMG, it's soooo good. Thanks Aarti, I'll be looking for more great recipes from you.

My family loved it! It came out delicious. I was skeptical about the amount of onions but I was surprised how sweet they tasted when caramelized. I served it with kebabs, and it made the perfect side dish. Thanks Aarti, this will become a regular dish at my house.

Truly shocked that this tasted like brown library paste! I love Indian food and this is the first dish I have made just as shown from Aarti's show. It will also be my last. I wasted not just the 5 onions etc., but even sausage peppers, tomatoes and very attempts of adding ANY flavor were in vain. Don't waste your time....I won't!

edited version: I made it right after the show...just slow in posting. I lLOVED it! It has really great FLAVOR! I too, used brown rice basmati, which made it even heartier. I only had 3 onions left & thought about using 1 onion...glad I didn't...instead I trusted SISTA AARTI & glad I did! I'm sure it made a big difference by adding more moisture and flavor. I know someone who does not like lentils (what's not to like?...and he even liked it! I hesitated on whether or not I wanted to add a cinnamon stick...but trusted Aarti again...had to have the real thing!

I don't know how you guys cook it, but i follow all the instruction adn watch the tv show, 30 minutes for cooking the rice, it never cook. I put more water and still not cook, I move it to rice cooker, still not cook, only the lentil get more soft and smooth.
