This cake was absolutely perfect! I made it for my brothers birthday and everyone loved it. It wasn't too sweet and was smooth as silk. The only change I made was cutting the recipe in half to make a two layer cake. I will always use this as my go to recipe for chocolate cake. LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!!!!

I love love love this recipe!!! I cut everything in half and make a sheet cake in a 9x13 pan. Instead of water I substituted 1/2 water and 1/2 coke( I boiled the coke with the water What a wonderful moist cake and flavor! Im not a fan of the frosting. I enjoy more of a buttercream. However thats ok and part of creating a recipe to fit your own likes and dislikes.

Fantastic chocolate cake. I subsituted half the water for coffee (common addition to chocolate cakes and reduced baking soda for high altitude baking. Had wonderful flavor, moist and held up well for a layering cake. Thanks for the great recipe Ree! *(Also frosted with a buttercream and added smashed oreo's mixed with buttercream as a filling between layers!

Best cake EVER!! I made this for my husband's birthday because he loves chocolate cake, and it was a HUGE success. Since it makes a lot of cake, I made one layer cake and one 13x9 cake (instead of 4 layers and I poked holes into the 13x9 cake with the handle of a small knife once it cooled and poured one small jar of caramel topping over it, then I use cool whip as the icing for the 13x9 cake. It worked so much better than the mixes! To respond to another reviewer, I had runny frosting at first too, but I figured out that it was only because I didn't let it cool long enough in the fridge. If you're in a rush, adding powdered sugar works, but otherwise just let it cool completely. As AWESOME as this cake was on his birthday- the best part is that it was EVEN BETTER the next day. I don't know why, but the cake was even more dense and rich after spending some time in the fridge. I will definitely be repeating this recipe. Thanks for posting it Ree!

    WOW!! IT"S AMAZING!
I woke up early this morning to bake the cake and make the frosting. The cake was soooooo good when it was warm fresh out of the oven! It was like the chocolate lava cake!
After that, I went to work.

7 hours later, I came home to add the vanilla to the frosting and frost the cake. The frosting is AMAZING.. It literally was "melt-in-your-mouth" fluffy and smooth!

I can't believe how huge the cake was. Everyone only needed a thin layer of cake, so my cake could feed 30 people or so! I love this cake =

This cake is unbelievable! Deep rich chocolate, and very large so it feeds a crowd, such as we have at birthday parties. Perfectly decadent, just like a good dessert should be. And it goes together in such an usual way and is very easy to make. I'm usually a light cook, but I wouldn't think of cutting back on this. Everyone deserves a treat every now and then, and this definitely is one of the finest treats I've ever had.

I tried making 1/2 of the icing and it was very liquidy. I had to add a lot of powdered sugar to thicken it up. I'm not sure what went wrong. Can someone help?
