I loved the crunchiness of these onion rings but did anyone else think they were a little bland? I think next time I will take the suggestion of only using a little of the panko mixture and when it starts to get mushy, throw it out and put some fresh on a plate. I also have my own blend of seasoned salt and I think I'll try using that in place of just kosher salt for added flavor. But love the texture and that they aren't fried.

I tried them this evening, right after I watched your show. They were excellent! My friend started to tell me what makes a good "batter" he did not think they would come out ok, he not only ate his words but the onion rings also.

Thank you Jeff for this delicious alternative to the fried onion ring! The key to not having the panko turn to mush is to ensure you tap off the excess buttermilk mixture before dipping into the panko.

Made these tonight with my husband. We both loved them! Tastes better than fried without the added fat. I also halved the recipe and it was plenty. Certainly will be making these again. Oh and try Alton's horseradish recipe as a dipping sauce with these. Delish!

I don't even like onion rings and I absolutely LOVED these! My husband made them and they were perfect. It's amazing that they turn out so crispy even though they are baked. We love to watch the Sandwich King. Jeff is such a natural and his recipes are fantastic. So happy he won Food Network Star!

I added a little pepper and used some zucchini stripe as well. They were fantastic.I made half the recipe and still had the flour mixture and buttermilk mixture left. Next time I would cut both in half. Just made the recipe and can't wait to make it again.

This is the best recipe i found on this website. It taste perfect! My whole family doesn't want to get the fried and greasy crud from fast food restaurants and begs me to make these. If you need the perfect side dish, this should be at the top of your list. The best part is, is that it's NOT FRIED! Thank you so much Jeff!!!

Great. Read some comments before I started so I avoided some of the other complaints. I cut the salt in half and it was perfect. I mixed my panko and kept most in a bowl only putting what I needed on a plate. As it got lumpy on the plate, I just thew that away and poured more from the bowl. I made a 1/2 recipe of the flour mixture and the buttermilk mixture and a full recipe of the crumbs and it worked out perfectly. It made one very large onion and that was enough for two and plenty of leftovers.
