oops. I forgot to add in my review that I used 1 packet of brown gravy mix to the meat mixture insead of the flour and worchestire
it was delicious !!! I changed the recipe a little...believe me it was so goood I had to make another dish the same night. I used sweet potatoes instead ( the yams kind. I used ground turkey, seasoned it and cooked then drained the water...next added the DICED celery and onions, and peas cooked 5 min , turned off heat...mashed the yams seasoned with little brown sugar and added CUMIN (secret ingredient...spread in meat mixture first I THEN PUT THE SHREDDED CHEESE ONLY 1 CUP OF CHEESE(NOT ON TOP LIKE THE RECIPE.Next I spreaded the yams on top and baked. oh yeah no banana!

I followed the recipe except for the banana. However, our family just did not care for the recipe. The flavors together just did not work.

I boiled the ground turkey, drained, rinsed with hot water. Instead of the raw carrots and frozen peas, I used one 16-ounce bag of frozen peas and carrots thawed and drained to get rid of extraneous liquid. Skipped the banana. Used extra sharp cheddar cheese, which seemed less greasy and melted beautifully. I don't get how this recipe is on 30-minute meals. It took me a long time to make and many pots. But it was good! And made for good leftovers!!

Whew! I should have trusted my instincts. The meat and grated veg mixture and the sauce actually all taste good together. Sweet potato and banana? Not so much.
The meat mixture TOPPED with sweet potato with banana and then SMOTHERED in tons of cheddar cheese? YUCK. My daughter, 2 friends, and I all pushed it aside after a few bites. Skip this one.

Since I like all that is called for in this recipe I was cautiously optimistic about it. Most of the reviews were really good or really bad. I suspected the negatives did not do it right or did not like sweet potatoes much. Against my better judgement ,I did use the banana. I always wonder why people feel the need to sweeten "sweet potatoes".
When I went to the store to get a few things I needed, there were Yams but no sweet potatoes. I did not give it much thought at the time, though I knew there was some difference between the 2, I did not know what it was, but did not think it was a big deal. As I put the yams in the pot, it hit me that this might be the reason why there were such vast differences in reviews. At that moment I knew that the yams would not work as well.
I would try this again; with 1/2 sweet potatoes and 1/2 white potatoes. NO YAMS or BANANAS!!
Another thing incorrect in directions: the cheese should be added in the last 5 minutes of cooking. That was very vague (along with the other problems previously mentioned.

I haven't made this yet (probably tonight, but I have made my own version of Turkey Shepard's pie with leftover Thanksgiving dinner. I layered turkey, left over vegetables, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy and potatoe on time. Bake in the over for 1 hour or until bubbly. Awesome. Try it.

I have made this dish with the banana in it several times. It seems the reviewers are not doing it correctly, make sure your banana is ripe, you should not taste it at all and it is there to add a little sweetness ti the sweet potatoes. I suggest using correct quality ingredients. I guess it should be called intermediate if so many people screwed it up. If you tasted banana the you did it wrong! you should not be able to taste the hot sauce as well. Oh well, at least mine has come out perfect several times.

ok so i decided to try this but there were something that didn't convinced me so this is what i did:
first i only drizzeld the pot with olive oil before i put in the ground turkey which helped it to be less soggy and i seasoned with garlic pouder, salt and pepper.
second i finely diced the onion, the carrots and the celery instead of grating it.
third i used store bought gravy that is the one that comes in a pouch and you just add water to it not the canned one.
and finally i left out the banana it just seemed weird to me.
it came out awsome and my husband cant get enough of it!!!!!

or else I would not have made it. I agree with other reviewers: skip the banana, and cheese on top(?. Weird. My daughters took one or two bites and stopped, my husband and I endured. This recipe will never be made around here again. If you are willing to try, though, skip the banana (why is it there in the first place, no hot sauce, and no cheese. Don't forget to add the gravy to the meat mixture. The directions leaves that little detail out, but the experienced cook would know what to do.

After making this dish tonight, I have to agree with the other reviewers. Hold the banana and don't add it. It didn't ruin the pie, but it did add a certain alien flavor that seemed to contrast with the sweet potato. In most cases all you tasted was the banana and were constantly reminded of it.
I will make this again, except no banana and cinnamon (at the suggestion of another reviewer. I would spend some extra time on making the gravy extra good and thick. You can season the turkey with whatever you want, and drain excess grease or water unless you like it like that.
This was surprisingly quick to make, and I can imagine this would be perfect for a hungry family of 3-6, with addition of a 1-2 sides.
