Those not in the know might drive right by Smokin' Guns BBQ in North Kansas City's industrial district, but they would miss what Guy calls "one killer brisket." Helmed by Phil Hopkins and his wife, Linda, the eatery boasts "competition-worthy" 'cue that has earned more than 400 awards to date.

    Went there on a Tuesday evening and it wasn't busy, but that meant more attention for me. Burnt ends were meatier and more tender than I expected, which made me very happy. Also sampled the Pulled Pork and Ribs which were both excellent, and the sausage was pretty good too. For the sides, I didn't waste stomach space on the sliced bread they served, or the roll, although both looked appetizing. I did love the baked beans which had the BBQ flavor and bits of pork rib meat. Friendly staff and simple menu made for an excellent experience. Only two sauces (one with a bite and dry rub out of a salt shaker, allowed me to turn up the flavor to how I liked it. I will definitely come back again.

    I feel Smoking Guns is overrated. I purchased the burnt ends and they were not even burnt. The spare ribs were fair to midland. Beans were tasty. It was not worth driving out of the way.

    Get the ribs! Did I tell you how good the ribs are? Get them! Sides good too, but get the ribs!!
