Tortilleria Nixtamal

Thousands of pounds of masa and up to 10,000 tortillas a day come from Tortilleria Nixtamal. Guy liked the sweet and savory taco al pastor with pineapple, topped with white onion, cilantro and lime. The hearty pozole Guy found comforting and soothing. Regulars enjoy the tamales and tortas as well.

After a wonderful day touring the Louis Armstrong house museum down the street, a group of friends visited Tortilleria Nixtamal and we couldn't have had a better meal or a better experience. Everything on the menu was very inexpensive and included mostly tacos, tamales, and small plate items. Food highlights included the veggie taco and the seriously delicious shrimp taco. Since the restaurant makes tortillas right there we couldn't help but ask them about the process. The staff were super friendly and even gave us a tour of the tortilla machine and the process of cooking down the corn. Nixtamal also provides tortillas to restaurants all over NYC, so check out the map of restaurants on the wall for who's getting a delivery the following day. We loved our visit and picked up extra tortillas ($2.25/pound and extra salsa ($2.50 to take home with us.

I grew up in Queens and I was looking forward to eating at this restaurant after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. While the tortillas might be fresh and home made that's about it for freshness. The pico de gallo was at least 3 days old, I make my own and can tell when it's not fresh. The chips were home made but way to oily. I tried almost everything on the menu and nothing stuck out for me. The food was mediocre at best. The service was terrible. The waiters hardly spoke English and totally ignored you. I felt like I was being bothersome. If you want great Mexican food that is truly homemade go to 5 Burros in Forest Hills. Great pricing for quality food. Chips are home made and not greasy and everything else is made fresh daily and you can taste it.
