Web Exclusive Tips: Supper for a Song

Garlic
You can store almost anything in the freezer! And fresh garlic is no exception. It lasts beautifully in the freezer, and I truly believe that there is no substitute for freshly minced garlic!

Shrimp
Feeding shrimp to a family of four for under ten dollars? Yes! Medium shrimp goes on sale quite often, so it usually ends up being cheaper than even the small shrimp, if I time my shrimp dishes right. So in my house, the fish counter prices dictate when we get special treats like shrimp for dinner.

Broccoli
We eat more broccoli than probably any vegetable in our house. For years, I would just use the florets and would discard the stems. Then one day I was low on broccoli, so I kept the stems and trimmed them to be slim and beautiful. My family loved the new long look (and taste)! So in this recipe, I keep the stems and I have less to buy at the grocery store to feed the whole family.

Ice cream
Take advantage of ice cream wars! There is always an ice cream on sale, often half price or 2 for 1.. and it goes without saying that it keeps well in the freezer.

Shaved chocolate
Halloween is coming up, so here is my candy-buying tip. I hate to run out of candy for local trick or treating children. Since I overbuy a little, I make sure that the last three bags of candy I open are just plain chocolate bars, so if I have any leftovers, I can pull them from the candy pile and put them into my baking stock. (I’m less likely to eat them there, too!)
