Yes, it did need more cooking time, but just poke a knife in the potatoes and you can tell if they are done or not. I don't pull anything out of the oven without checking it first. Otherwise, this is quite a good recipe. I like a very spicy dish, so I went with the nutmeg amount. I truly enjoy Aaron's dishes and go right to him for ideas.

I wish I had read the reviews before I tried this as it needed 2 hrs 15 minutes of cooking time. It sure messed up the timing of my dinner.

cant figure out why those thinly sliced potatoes are so resistant to cooking. I also had to add more milk. Next time I will also reduce the flour and add more flavorful cheeses. I do like the crunchy topping.

In general, I really love you Big Daddy, but I relied on your au gratin potato recipe to wow my family and fell WAY short. I ended up cooking the recipe an additional 15 minutes, but even then, it was no where near enough. The potatoes were dry and severely under cooked. I was also confused on what kind of baking dish would produce the best results. I tried a deep corning ware dish...obviously the wrong choice...perhaps a shallow 9 x13 dish would have produced better results. However, given how underdone the potatoes were, I would have probably almost doubled the cooking time. Lastly, it needed more salt seasoning. Overall, it had potential...I just wish I would have tried it, tweaked it and THEN severd it to my family. At least my presentation was beautiful (that makes up for a little, don't you think??:

I made this one night for my family of 6. They are usually very picky, but this looked easy and good so I thought I would try it. I made Parmesan encrusted chicken as the main course with it and a nice salad with raspberry vinaigrette. I followed all of the directions and had watched the show earlier in the day...but...potatoes were soooooo not done and I had to through them out. definitely needs about 60 minutes cooking time (or more and yes, I sliced them thin! Not the side to make unless you have the time to wait for them!

I loved this recipe. It was easy to make and so much better than an Emeril potatoes au gratin recipe I tried. Since I have to watch my colesterol, I used a combination of 1/2 a stick Smart Balance Butter Blend and 4 tablespoons exta virgin olive oil (in both the sauce for the potatoes and the panko topping. I also used all cheddar cheese (2% extra sharp. As mentioned by other reviewers, the potatoes needed more cooking time. I baked them for about 50 minutes before removing the foil. Many of the other reviewers were turned off by the nutmeg and some said it was too much. I thought it was a perfect addition. One more thing, I couldn't find smoked paprika but I did have smoked black pepper so I mixed a teaspoon of each together for the topping--delicious!

This looks good. My wife and I are going to try this with macaroni and chesse instead of the potatoes but we are going to do the potatoes also. About the amount of nutmeg, by watching Aaron's shoe on this, it didn't look like he used two teaspoons of nutmeg, that might be a typo.

Aaron: I really enjoy you and your show, but this recipe was real bad. I just couldn't get the potatoes tender, and the nutmeg didn't help at all, plus the cheeses used did not give much flavor...You made it look so yummy, but it just was not. I will read comments on recipes first before I make again.

These potatoes don't get done in time. In reading the reviews, I thought maybe the people didn't slice the potatoes thin enough. I slced mine thin and cooked an extra 20 minutes. They were still slightly crunchy.

I omitted the nutmeg based on other reviews. They were very tasty, but they definitely need to cook about 60 minutes before removing foil.

This dish was very good and flavorable. I omitted the nutmeg (not much of a fan and added bacon , which gave it a very smokey flavor. I let it bake covered for one hour and uncovered for an additional fifteen minutes. This was a crowd pleaser. Will try other dishes from Big Daddy's House.
