I made the steak and the onion-date compote for dinner tonight. It was a big hit! Everyone loved it. The only thing I did different was take the cover off the onions before they turned brown. They had been cooking for an hour and hadn't caramelized at all and once I took the cover off they were caramelized and ready for the next step within 15 minutes. Really simple terrific recipe.

It sounded a bit strange first, but the taste blue us away. We and our friends loved it!

This is a very easy meal to prepare, even for a kitchen novice.
It was good but not mind-blowing. I thought the rub was bland. My husband went nuts over the onion compote but I found it a bit too sweet. It doesn't need the sweetness of the dates. I halved the compote recipe but it took much longer to cook than the recipe directions indicate (almost twice as long.
Having said that, today I made sandwiches with the leftover meat, compote, and a spread of sour cream mixed with cilantro, garlic, horseradish, and lemon juice on toasted bread for lunch and that was fantastic.
