Because I didn't have some of the ingredients on hand, but plenty of squash, I made a couple changes to the recipe, with, I think, equally delicious results. Instead of the pigeon peas, I used red lentils, which cook up fine in the amount of time in the recipe. I also didn't have cumin or turmeric (I just moved, so my pantry isn't quite stocked yet so instead I added yellow curry powder and cinnamon. I have a supermarket near me with a big natural/organic section which carries the unsweetened coconut, the texture of the coconut more than flavor is really the knockout in this soup. I love the unique flavor of this dish, and it freezes well too. Thank you Aarti!! :

I am not sure what went wrong. I was so excite to try this dish and it was not what I expected. I could taste the cilantro but everything else was bland.

Thank you Aarti and food network! Oh, my gosh it is so good! You have to try this. I used split yellow peas, and I think they take longer to cook(like an hour or so, so I added the squash after the peas were almost cooked. It is so good, I cook lentils with Indian spices all the time, but have never thought to add squash or coconut. It is so creamy and it is so good together. Definitely a new family favorite.

A party for every one of the senses - literally, spicy, sweet, slightly sour, salty... only not bitter. :

This was really good and I will make it again, but I think I added too much lime, on the episode Aarti seemed to just squeeze the lime in but I used my citrus reamer and maybe that's where I went wrong. Otherwize it was great and my husband liked it a lot.

Well, the taste is amaing but waiting on the split peas to break-up. I didn't realize "pigeon" I bought yellow split peas. I have followed the recipe to a tee but can't get the peas to soften. But...the flavor so far....soooo good. The shreded cocunut is amazing and I still haven't even added the heat. Can't wait..but yummy thus so far.

What a FABULOUS and easy recipe!! As a vegetarian I am always looking for recipes to serve our meat-eating friends and family. This one is now on the top of my list. Also I agree that I will make a double recipe the next time. Love it. Thank you Aarti

I have never watched your show so I've never made a recipe of yours and I saw this epiode and made this stew the next day and it was fan-tastic. I didn't add coconut b/c alls I could find was sweetened but I'll try to locate unsweetened and make it again. I think you were very rude by not telling people to DOUBLE UP on the recipe b/c it's soooo good!! Next time, I will make a double batch : Now I'm going to start Tivo'ing your show. You rock Aarti!!

I can say that it was quite tasty and very hearty for a veggie stew. I saw Aarti make the stew this morning and being a fan of butternut squash, I tried it. I followed some of the advice of the reviewers, such as using coconut milk. I just added about 1/2 c and got none of the flavor. I couldn't find brown or black mustard seeds, so I used yellow. The tempering added heat but I don't see where it added more flavor. The kicker was the honey and the lime juice at the end. WOW! Subtle but what an impact on the flavor, which according to many reviewers, is like phenomenal, but to me it is just a very good butternut squash stew. I am open to receiving some advice on what I could do to take my stew up a notch. The split peas are just a little underdone. I guess I should have soaked them first instead of just washing them. I gave this four stars since I was not able to get the same WOW factor as so many others.
