I have made this before after watching Aarti make it on her Youtube show and it is by far the yummiest I have had. We LOVED it. It just makes Indian food so accessible. Thanks Aarti!

I was in the mood for some lentils and after seeing Aarti make this on her show I decided to give it a try. I followed the recipe pretty closely except I doubled the recipe because I had a big bag of lentils. One thing the recipe mentions is that the lentils need a 30 min soak - the directions on the bag said this was unnecessary and they were tender with no soaking after 30 mins of cooking. It probably depends on the type of lentil you use.

I thought the spices were just enough to give it some flavor, but not enough to overpower the dish. If you like things really spicy you may want to add more.

I ate a big bowl of these lentils with some naan. Very good...I'll be saving this recipe.

Sooooo yummy. Thank you so much for the don't-salt-the-lentils tip. This explains so much! This is now officially my go-to recipe for red lentils (my fave. Love the show and looking forward to more delicious vegetarian Indian dishes : Thanks Aarti!

Every time I watch the show I want everything I see and I am making just about all I've seen. This was a really great dish, I didn't have a serano so I used a jalapeno and I had to use canned tomatoes because all the fresh looked totally flavorless. I served it with her Mango Pulled Pork, the slaw from that episode, and rice. It was a great hit and I'm planning on having a big bowl over rice for dinner. Yum, yum!

I saw this on her show and immediately wanted to try it. It's super easy to make and the bagaar part totally brought out so much flavor in the lentils. Aarti was also right when she said the house would smell so good while the lentils were cooking. I'm sharing this with my whole family! What an awesome dish to add to my repertoire!!

It looks like the recipe is very involved but is really easy if the ingredients are prepped ahead of time (mis en place and ready to go. I doubled the recipe and the only change that I made was to substitute canned tomatoes and a jalapeno pepper . I made it on Tuesday and just had some for breakfast on Thursday - I swear it gets better every day. This will become a staple in our household too.

Lentils have vexed me in the past. This recipe was PERFECT. Wow. Just wow. Amazing. Better flavor than any that I've ever had in any Indian restaurant in town. YUM! Thank you Aarti, and thanks to your Mum! :

My family loved this recipe. Even my 5 & 7 year old children loved it! I had to use regular brown lentils though. My grocery store does not carry red lentils. I tried to find them at Whole Foods Market as well but no luck there either. I also used brown mustard seeds instead of black because I was not able to find black mustard seeds either. I was very impressed by the flavors of this dish! The seasoned tempered oil added at the end made the lentils so flavorful and delicious! I hope to find some red lentils & black mustard seeds soon so I can try the recipe as written. This recipe is a keeper for sure! Another winner Aarti!

This was sooo good! Made it exactly as written and exactly how she did it on the show and it's absolutely delicious. Tempering was easy and actually fun. I felt like I learned a new 'trick' in the kitchen!

The only thing I'm a little worried about is I feel like I put A LOT of salt in it to get the flavor just right. I have to watch my salt intake and usually omit salt altogether but this recipe didn't taste right without salt (a lot of it, apparently.

I also used one serrano and for me, that's just the right amount of heat. I did whisk it but not so much because we like it chunky. Don't skip the cilantro topping. That makes it taste fresh and adds such nice color. I will definitely make this again.
