I had already saved the "red lentil soup" recipe today and was planning to make it, when Aarti made "Mum's everyday red lentils" today. The recipes differ slightly but not significantly. It was so very good--I had two bowls of it. Glad there will be leftovers for lunch this week! The soup had to cook longer than she had recommended but I just waited it out. I used my immersion stick blender to puree it, then added a dollop of yogurt to my bowl, and spritzed some lime over it. Really awesome. The only changes I made to the recipe: used canned tomatoes (2 cans, since my "fresh" ones were really unsatisfactory; added a full teaspoon of hot smoked paprika; and used 2 tablespoons of oil (from the original recipe and no black mustard seeds (also from the original recipe. Probably used more ginger than I should have, since I had minced fresh ginger in a jar and didn't know how much to use, but it didn't seem like too much.

I made this today, and it's gone. This is one of the most satisfying dishes I've made in a long time. and it's very easy! The flavors melt into one another, and the result is so yummy...like a lentil jam.

I loved this recipe - it was really simple to make. I added lemon juice and chopped onions, which I think made it even better... This is the first recipe I've tried from Aarti, but it sure won't be the last! I would have been so disappointed if she hadn't won the Next Food Network Star!

This looked so good so we ran out and got the ingredients. It is as yummy as it looked. A word of caution to those who don't like a little heat, I was planning on pulling the pepper out, but the whisking broke it all up into the soup. We also added a couple of shrimp to it at the very end. The oil and spice thing was just as fun as you made it look. Oh, our store only had regular mustard seeds and it seemed to work out fine, I don't know how the flavor changes with brown/black mustard seeds.

Aarti, I followed you throught the whole competition. The moment I saw you I said to my friend, "that's the one they are going to pick."

To date, you have not disappointed ! Everything you have make looks and TASTES absolutely delicious !

I am an Italian guy who loves to cook. The one thing I am not good at is making Indian food. I guess its because I have such minimal exposure to it.

You have opened my eyes to a whole new world of cuisine !

All the best ! Congratulations to you.

I've never cooked anything I saw on a cooking show, but after today's "Aarti Party" I bought everything for "Everyday Lentils." I'm not much of a cook, but I love lentils and this looks great. I was really intrigued by the popping and blooming spices - I've never seen anything like it. I have one question: my store lacked black mustard seeds, I had to buy yellow mustard seeds. Will that change the dish much? Also (OK 2 questions, I'm tempted to add ham or sausage - I'm hoping it does ruin the idea of the dish. Thanks, Aarti!!!

    Aarti:

You are a true star. So refreshing....

My niece just decided she is a vegetarian and I will be sending her the dal recipe (along with all of the spices. She is at Univ of Vermont and not sure what they can get up there.

Good Luck to you and Mama Rose.

This is warm and tasty! We had it for lunch today and it tasted like it had been cooking all day, even though it was a relatively quick prep. I did make a few adjustments, though...

I didn't have tomatoes or even tomato sauce, so I used tomato paste with added water. I only had regular lentils- green ones - and not quite a cup, I may add! - so I added a can of baked beans too. I think that muddied it up a bit, so I squirted in a few glugs of malt vinegar.

I didn't have a serrano pepper, so I threw in a few chipotles in adobado sauce, removing them before serving.

I've never put seeds or spices in oil like that before, but it sure woke up the flavors! Thanks for another winner, Aarti!

looks delicious. Yummy I know because I cook it every day-a must for vegetarians. Read my article Humble Lentil In WellBeing magazine to know about the science behind the use of spices. lentil,,garlic etc. Glad that you did not include hot dogs in the soup. You are a great story teller. Did not even know that they have hot dogs in India. Then I left India 30 plus years ago. Let me tell you one thing as a scientist.hot dog is the worst kind of meat one can have. Did not feel like writing this separately for the other recipe of yours.
