I doubled the recipe and had no seeds so I used mustard powder and ground cumin. I thought it needed alot more seasoning, and was surprised at how much more I added. I'll make it again, but as another rater mentioned, I'll double up on the seasonings (even if I double the recipe, those seasonings will be doubled again!!. I was happy with the flavors when I got all done, but my husband still needed a kick and added... Louisiana Hot Sauce. grrhhhhh

I love to cook Indian food - or at least I love TRYING to cook Indian food! I could never master a good dal, but after trying this recipe, I'm confident I can serve a dal that competes with my local curry house. This was delicious, quick and easy. My husband and I like more flavourful, spicy food, so I took the advice of others and doubled up the amount of spices (big rounded tsp of each and also added 1 tsp of chilli powder. You could really even triple the spices for an extra boost of flavour, as it would be very bland with only 1/2 tsp of each spice. I even once quadrupled the spices by accident when I halved the amount of lentils, but kept 1 tsp of each spice, and it was still very good.

To eliminate the fat, I cut out the oil, and found no difference in the taste. So, it can be an extremely healthy recipe by eliminating the oil.

Overall, with a bit of adjustments, it's a delicious recipe and highly recommended. I serve it with a saag aloo, tandoori prawns and roti.

This was a big hit with my menfolk. I didn't have mustard seeds so I substituted ground mustard powder. Very inexpensive and simple to make. Meets our gluten-free, vegetarian needs. I'm definitely adding this to our list of regular meals.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars! It's delicious. It's so good, I refused to share with my husband, and I'm not sorry. Beautiful flavors, easy to make, what could be better?

I had a cup of red lentils left and was looking for something to do with them. This is the perfect recipe - my husband and son thought it was amazing. Served with simple sauteed cod and steamed broccoli. Aarti's recipes are terrific - full of color and pizazz just like her!

Fabulous recipe with full flavor! I subbed yellow mustard seeds, since that's all I had in the pantry, and it was still great. I served this dish with some Tandoori Chicken (Food Network's recipe and steaming basmati rice, and everyone at dinner raved about the flavors! I did add quite a bit of salt to the dish before serving. Oh, and my 13 month old son also loves this dish... can't get enough of it!

This recipe was so delicious! The flavors were so good that I didn't have to add much salt, which made me feel even better eating it. This was my first time cooking one of Aarti's dishes. I can't wait to try another one!

Just delicious. Easy, healthy, and tasty, can't beat that. My 20 month old son gobbles it up with the rest of the family. I have really enjoyed expanding my Indian cooking with Aarti!!

Followed the recipe exactly. Turned out awesome. Served it with naan bread and was so full after! Looking forward to leftovers and making it again.

Pretty fail proof. I used tinned tomatoes, Sriracha, and didn't have any mustard seed, but with a goodly amount of salt and pepper it still turned out great!
