I doubled up on the spices & it came out great; served it with basmati rice.

Excellent recipe...I didn't change a thing (other than I used the dry cilantro I had on hand instead of fresh...still good! and it reminded me a lot of a little mom and pop Indian restaurant we have in town. This has definitely become part of my printed collection!

It was fine, but I thought it was a little bland. I ended up almost doubling up on the spices. I also added lots of salt and crushed red pepper. I think I would also use more onion next time.

It tasted pretty good. I have made many of Aarti's recipes before. I left out the Serrano chile but it needs it. I think I added a bit too much cumin because it was a bit overwhelming. I cooked the lentils a bit longer to make them thicker and softer. I used quite a bit of salt because it needed it. I served it over basmati rice.

Excellent! Only substitution I made was to use cherry tomatoes I had on hand. It was an easy and delicious dish. I also learned from this recipe the trick of whisking the lentils at the end. Gives it a great texture.
I have made this recipe twice now and everyone in our family loves it. A keeper. Thank you!

Just made lentils for the first time using this recipe. Absolutely delicious! I improvised a little by chopping the tomato, adding more garlic, and adding curry powder, and a mid east-west blend from a local winery. Great interchangable recipe!

This turned out really well. I make dal all the time usually using a packaged masala dal spice blend but my grocery store hasn't been carrying it lately. I also have a recipe from Whole Foods that I use but it just wasn't as good as I knew dal could be so I went looking for another version and found Aarti's. I'm really glad I came across this version; it was delicious.
This was my first Aarti recipe and I look forward to trying others.

This was delicious! My children, 5-years and 3-years even liked it. I sauteed the veggies before adding the water and lentils.

Perfect! I make this at least once a week, using the garlic/ginger paste Aarti often mentions (brilliant idea- I'm never without it!and adding black pepper, curry and garam masala just because I love them. I've made it exactly as written, used diced tomatoes instead of whole, and added other diced vegetables when I have them onhand and it's always delicious. This is quickly becoming one of my go-to comfort foods. Thank you Aarti- SO happy to see your recipes on Food Network!

I've really been into red lentils lately and I liked this recipe a lot. It was easy to make. I was also looking for a good red lentil soup recipe and I found a really nice one on a blog called ellebeaugrease blogspot com. It was Lebanese style, slightly spicy and delicious. I've been making it about once a week now.
