Very, very yummy! We love Indian food and eat it often in restaurants but never tried making it at home. This dal was definitely a winner. It needs a lot of salt, but all legumes do. Don't be afraid! Really delicious dish, thanks!

This was my first attempt at making lentils and I was so impressed! Initially it seemed like it would be much more difficult than it was. I made this with the broccoli slaw raita, and the contrast of textures and taste made for a fabulous meal. Thank you Aarti--we adore you!

Tasty dish and certainly easy to prepare; good base recipe for exploring techniques of dal preparation. A bit bland and mild -- will increase the serrano pepper content next time and add some of the Ajika dal masala that another commenter mentioned. Didn't have any fresh tomatoes on hand, so used tinned; seems to have worked out well. Served with plain (salt & ghee basmati rice.

This will be a regular part of the menu from now on.

Amazing lentil dish. I added extra water and ate it as a soup. This will become a staple in my repertoire,

Really, really good - even my brother, who isn't a super adventerous eater liked it. I'll definitely make these again.

This was a bit tricky for my first try at lentils with a tempering oil but it turned out quite good! I didn't have fresh ginger but added coriander powder, ginger powder, and asafoetida. Yum!

Delicious one-pot wonder. Was concerned a medium saucepan wouldn't be large enough, but it just fit. It's included in the show as a side dish, but it can be a light main course for 2-3 people. Leftovers are great for lunch. I let the lentils sit for a few minutes after adding the oil mixture, to let the flavors really combine.
